In the beginning of the story, Greg is frustrated with his father for not letting him play on a basketball team. He resents his father’s lectures and is unmotivated to improve his grades. This is reflected by the chaotic rainstorm that seems to cast a dark, cold light on everything. By the end, Greg learns from Lemon to admire his father and what he teaches him, knowing that his lectures and persistence are done out of love and hope for his future.
