In the beginning of the story, a violent rainstorm rages outside. Rain falls hard and lightning strikes on a cold, windy night. By the end of the story, the weather is warmer and the storm has cleared, leaving only puddles in the banks of the streets.
Identify and describe a major conflict in the story.
A major conflict in the story is that of Man vs. Man. Lemon and Greg have to keep the men downstairs from finding Lemon’s supposed “treasure” and hurting him or Greg. Their solution is to make scary howls and other noises to trick the men into running away in fear.
How does Walter Dean Myers use the weather to indicate the change in Greg? How does the weather at the beginning of the story reflect his character? How does the weather at the end of the story reflect his character?

In the beginning of the story, Greg is frustrated with his father for not letting him play on a basketball team. He resents his father’s lectures and is unmotivated to improve his grades. This is reflected by the chaotic rainstorm that seems to cast a dark, cold light on everything. By the end, Greg learns from Lemon to admire his father and what he teaches him, knowing that his lectures and persistence are done out of love and hope for his future.
