Recommended: Role of teacher

To be an outstanding educator, one must be motivated, engaging, involved, caring, & knowledgeable. Teaching brings aspects of about fifty jobs into one.

An outstanding educator is motivated. Each morning, students come into the classroom expecting a teacher that is smiling & ready to begin a great day. Seeing the happy faces of the children should be enough motivation to complete anything, even the piles of papers waiting to be checked, graded, or filed! There is always work to be done, emails to be answered, and lessons to plan, but outstanding educators will do whatever it takes to create the best possible environment for their students to learn in each day.

He/she knows what is occurring in students' lives such as sports games & club meetings. Students learn new things about their teacher each day, & the classroom environment feels like a family. Involvement in home life is consistent & frequent as parents are updated through newsletters & blog posts. Report card conferences should never be the first time parents are hearing from the teacher.

An outstanding educator is warm & caring. Students know that they are able to confide in their teacher & consider him/her a role model. Teachers care deeply about each of their students & would do anything to protect them. An outstanding educator may almost be considered parent-like.

An outstanding educator is able to enforce discipline. Students know that they are cared for, but that the teacher holds the leadership role & should be adhered to & respected. Rules & expectations are set forth on the first day of school & are developed by both the teacher & students. Teachers should not over-discipline, just as they should not reward expected behaviors. Warnings are given, students are aware of their behavior status through a behavior chart in the classroom, & chances are given for students to redeem themselves & move out of a "warning zone." Each day is a blank slate for student
