Purchasing Gifts For Christmas Is Wrong

This time of year is known as a time of giving, but not all families are able to afford this opportunity. In today’s economy, one or more parents may be out of work, or are struggling just to pay for basic necessities, such as housing, food and clothing. As a result many families will not be able to participate during Christmas. Not only are families affected by this but those without families as well. There are men, women and children that are homeless or are orphans and the luxury of Christmas is unavailable. But through all the suffering, there are organizations and people combating this unfortunate issue, such as “Salvation Army”, “Toys for Tots” and some religious Institutions including the church I attend, who gather donations for families …show more content…

Purchasing gifts for Christmas is not even an option for some families because they have to make the choice of getting their child a gift or food for the whole week. My mother has a personal understanding of the issue so I decided to interview her over some of the difficulties she faced while being a single mother who was a flight attendant who was averaging around forty thousand a year and receiving very little child support. I was the only student so far that had grabbed them and she asked if she could talk to me after class about something. She wanted know if me and my family would interested in helping one of the students in her later class who had requested to be on the angel tree at school but was denied for unknown reasons. My teacher wanted to keep the situation as confidential as possible. I told her I would call my parents and speak to them about the student and his family. I called them during lunch and they felt this would be a wonderful opportunity to help a family in need. The next day I told my teacher that my parents wanted to help and that she could contact my Mom. My teacher contacted the student’s mother to get approval to give contact information to my Mom and shared with her that the student’s mother is single, disabled, and her car broke down. Because of her situation she is not able to provide for her family in the way that she wants too. It took several attempts to reach the mother because her phone was not working properly. After a couple of days we were finally able to speak with her and get some ideas on how we could best help them. She told us clothing would be best for the older kids and gave sizes for four of the children. She said the younger ones were fine because they were able to receive hand-me-downs from family members.
