Twitter has grabbed attention of a variety of professions from sports analysts to business executives. Twitter can be used to share information, provide advice, and promote events. The multiple ways Twitter is used is very similar to the duties of a public relations professional. Although Twitter is used to supplement the tools that are already available for PR professionals, twitter is a great way to accommodate practices exorcised during the proactive stage of the conflict management life cycle. Many PR professional and agencies have started to merge Twitter in everyday practice. In particular, Landis Communication, Simply Zesty, and Bill Stoller have taken advantage of Twitter to further their work in the public relations field. While monitoring the three twitter accounts a distinctive pattern in the information shared presented a direct connection with the three subcategories of the proactive stage.

The reason I choose to follow Landis Communication, twitter handle @LandisCommunication, because they were based out of San Francisco that have a firm grasp on the social media aspect of public relations which is something I am interested in. ...conventional way looking at newspapers and web sites. Twitter has gave way to a whole new idea of how information can be provided to the public. Environmental scanning, issue tracking, and issue management can be done just by looking at a twitter feed of all the areas you would like to cover in finding out the particular information you are looking for. Twitter has integrated itself into every aspect of businesses and professions. The use of twitter, which was once to share feelings and inform, has now transformed into a bigger idea of people being able to understand what is happening everywhere around them on a larger scale.

The development and complete integration of the internet into everyday life has changed the modern perception of communication which, as a result, has changed the playing field for public relations practitioners everywhere. Social media opens new doors into the world of communicating and is undeniably useful for “anticipating, analyzing and interpreting public opinion, attitudes and issues that might impact, for good or ill, the operations and plans of the organization” (Horton, 2011). Through the successful creation of social media campaigns, an organization has the opportunity to create a positive public image, relationship, and lasting online presence that will benef...
Public relations have been a prominent aspect of society for millennia, dating back to 50 B.C. with Julius Caesar and referred by the Ancient Greeks as “semantikos”, which is the practice of persuading people into a belief or action (Witman, 2000). Public relations is still been influenced by the contributions of key historical and contemporary figures including Benjamin Franklin and Ivy Lee.
Lets take a look at how Twitter has changed the gathering, delivery and consumption of news. Looking at tactics of the influence of social media and the people has been known to be called navigating news online. “Facebook news users get more news from friends and family and see it as news they might well have gotten someplace else if Facebook did not exist. For Twitter users, though, the news links come from a more even mix of family and friends and news organizations. Most of these users also feel that without Twitter, they would have missed this kind of news”(Pew Research Center). Instead

Twitter is an online social media site that offers a way for people all over the world to communicate their thoughts and opinions, as well as share pictures, videos and links. Those who use Twitter are limited to 140 characters, called ‘tweets’, which can be posted to their personal profiles on the site, and made available for others to see. A person viewing the tweet can then respond to the message or ‘retweet’ it. A retweet means that they copy or forward the tweet to their followers. Followers are people who have elected to subscribe to a particular persons Twitter page. This is the general premise of Twitter and some of the common terms used to describe the actions that transpire on this particular social media site.
Twitter is an online social media network that users can interact though posting tweets. Twitter has around 115 million active users and is currently in the top ten most visited websites (Twitter Statistics). Twitter has become very popular since its start in 2006. At its start, Twitter only had 140 users, but according to “Twitter Statistics,” it has grown to over 230 million users today. A study has shown that from 2011-2012 tweeting at work increased by 700 percent. Twitter is most popular among the college age group with 31 percent of 18-24 year olds using Twitter every day and only eight percent of adults using Twitter regularly (Fitzgerald). Along with its ability to connect diverse people and things, Twitter’s character limit and easy-to-use-interface also draws in millions of users.
With social media’s rise in popularity, consumers were given another platform, a viral one, to discuss companies and their products/services. While the main focus of public relations has always been to promote communication and goodwill, the practice also promotes publicity for their clients. With the growth from traditional tools to more sophisticated tactics like video news releases, webcasts, blogs, and social networking, public relations has been able to transform its effectiveness in just a few short years. Any company that does not include the use of social media, is missing the opportunity to obtain valuable information about their brand while also losing a chance to spread its message on a platform that reaches
Social media is a revolution, which we are currently experiencing. It has changed the way people communicate and interact with one another, and opens up many more avenues to share news, information, and just general chit chat. Social media is relatively quiet young, but is here to stay for the foreseeable future. We are now at a point where online, we can share, read and react to lots of individual information being posted on microblogging websites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr and more. Twitter in particular has been widely embraced, and will centre most of the discussion.
“A study of the top 100 corporations of Fortune Global 500 companies by Burson-Marsteller, a global public relations firm, revealed that 65 percent are building relationships with stakehodlers on Twitter, 54 percent manage Facebook fan pages, 50 percent use YouTube channels, and 33 percent maintain corporate blogs” (Guffey & Lowey, 2015). It isn’t the customer that needs to learn new ways of communicating but the business. When a customer feels important and interaction is occurring, it will help the business. When the business knows how and when to use social media, and how to reach the target market, they will gain opportunities they never knew existed. Lastly, when the business uses social media to promote their specials, everyone wins. The customers win because they are getting a good deal, they are shopping with their favorite stores and they can share the posting with others. The business wins because it is free marketing and they will earn higher profits when they are reaching millions of customers. Social media is one of the newest and greatest form of communicating
After a massive powerful storm hit the northern Illinois service area of electric utility Commonwealth Edison on July 11, 2011, more than 900,000 customers were left without power during a hot, humid summer. ComEd crews and assistances from other states worked for days afterward the storm to restore services. Meanwhile, the company’s months-old social media (eChannels) strategy was put to its first major test. Its social media strategy goal was to “ understand the customers – ask, listen and be responsive,” enhance and communicate ComEd’s brand,” and “develop a consistent communications message for customers, employees, stakeholders and regulators.” They also followed six-part approach to using social media - monitor, respond, analyze, market, share and collaborate. (Commonwealth Edison: The Use of Social Media in Disaster Response, Page 5 & 6.) The social media team/crew, part of ComEd’s customer operations division, worked around the clock to respond to posts from customers on Facebook and Twitter. Engaging directly through social media was a good way to display and strengthen their relationships with customers and the general public, which was consistent with its corporate goal: “Keep the lights on and information flowing.” (Page 2.) The crew also did good job on handling customer quires, answer each individual tweet, and continued working for two weeks to be sure all questions were answered, directin...

Social media is pertinent in use of communication throughout today’s organizations. There are many social media platforms that allow organizations to convey communication to potential consumers, stakeholders and the public. “It is essential for leaders to integrate these technologies and seek the best way to use social media and networks to the advantage of the business” (Billington, 2012, p.1). Business owners find that keeping up with current technology trends is essential in having a competitive advantage in the market place and having a strict set of standards and strategy is important in quickly adapting to social media trends.
As social media overtakes traditional media in this new technological age, news organizations and journals have sought to keep up today’s trends in order to maximize their revenue and maintain traffic. As Clive Thompson stated in his article titled This Just In : I’m Twittering, he mentions that “the power is in the surprising effects that come from receiving thousands of pings from your posse. And this, as it turns out, suggests where the Web is heading.” News environments are rapidly changing to adapt with the diffusion of social media in order to promote their news products and reach to more people than ever before. Like other technological changes, social media is changing how society receive their news and keep updated with current events.
