Coates et al. (2013) used 173 participants from a university, their study examined the role of gender and perpetrator relationship in predicting psychological distress and self-worth of adults that experienced abuse as a child. Based on empirical evidence is suggests that psychological abuse it the most pervasive form of child abuse. The American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC) defines this type of abuse as “a repeated pattern of caregiver behavior or extreme incident(s) that convey to children that they are worthless, flawed, or unloved” (Coates et al., 2013, p. 395).
Mothers that have been psychologically abused by their spouse or partner are more susceptible or carrying that same psychological abuse onto their child.
