Uniforms are seen in almost every country in the world, but they are not really common in public schools in the United States. Some people think that wearing uniforms is a good idea while others oppose it. In my case, I had to wear uniforms at school when I started 1st grade up till my senior year in Vietnam. I found out that there are a lot of benefits for middle school and high school students when they are required to wear uniform at school in the United States.
First of all, wearing uniform helps reducing peer pressure and bullying. Statistics show that every two minutes someone is bullied over what they’re wearing worldwide but in North America they are every four minutes (Should Kids Wear Uniforms to School? Sahibjot – Debates). So what is the difference between Northern America and the worldwide? It is because in lots of countries such as China, Korea, India, and so on, students have to wear uniforms at high school while they do not in the States. Some high school students usually wear kind of clothes that are not really inappropriate at schools. Some girls dress really sexy with short skirts or crop tops that they can show their bodies. Also, boys sometimes wear shirts with bad words, slogans or pictures that relate to violence or bad things that may affect to other students. Therefore, if all students wear the same uniforms, teachers do not need to waste time on criticizing these students who dress inappropriately any more. Also, uniforms have school logo, so they remind students that they are studying at school and students more likely proud of their schools when they wear them. Having some sameness can create a safe environment in schools. Having school uniforms can help decrease in-school violence, theft rates and gang colors. School uniforms can also eliminate distraction that clothes can cause. According to a study done at a Long Beach middle school overall school crime decreased by 36% when they enforced a mandatory program. If people did not have to wear school uniforms gang rates may go up, theft rate would be higher and it would help the school see who belongs at school and who doesn’t. You need school uniforms to have a safe environment for people to teach and learn.
Kids use clothes to express the way they feel and making them wear a uniform is taking that away. School uniforms have been around for a long time. Most schools try to enforce the need of uniforms thinking it will help keep their students safer and better educated. Students shouldn’t have to wear uniforms for these three main reasons: some kids use clothes to express themselves and the uniform would take that away from them, uniforms cost a lot of money and some parents can’t afford it for their kids, doesn't really help with education.
Uniforms encourage modesty and also reduces the need for discipline from teachers because a student is not following dress code. When uniforms are in place, children come to class looking professional, which can promote a better learning environment. In a 1996 State of the Union address he said: “If it means that the school rooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside instead of what they're wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms” (qtd In Mitchell 1). Implementing a uniform policy in our public schools would benefit students socially, as well as academically. School uniforms for high school students have numerous positive effects, but at the same time, they have a variety of negative effects too. School uniforms positive effects are shown through attendance records, academics, and behavior; but its negative effects violates ones individuality and increases the amount of money spent on clothes.

When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects a student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students to be more confident of what they can achieve in life. First, uniforms are easier for schools to enforce than non-uniforms. Uniforms help students have fewer penalizing problems and increased attendance than non-uniform schools. When students are not wearing uniforms, students tend to act the way they are dressed for school.

There are thousands of kinds of uniforms in the world worn by people, such as police officers, firefighters, doctors, lawyers, security guards, and even fast-food restaurant workers. Which could be extended amount of time and effort with wealthier families. Uniforms also work great for making students feel equal and balanced.
Schools say, ‘Be yourself, and be respectful of others being themselves.’, but when they enforce school uniforms are they truly fostering this ideology? Administration and teachers like to say that schools are a safe place to be, but when school uniforms are mixed in it becomes a target for bullies. School uniforms put a damper on a lot of things, including the school's name. Schools should not require school uniforms.
