James Madison writes in Federalist #10 arguing that a larger republic following the Constitution would better unite the Union under a strong central government allowing more control over factions. What are three specific arguments that Madison makes to support this thesis? Be specific in your explanation. 1. The Constitution would prevent faction violence The Constitution would not be as unstable as the previous Articles of Confederation, and be able to control damage and violence caused by factions because through the large republic there would be more people with suffridge. Create weaker factions A larger republic would create weaker factions because with more people, there would be more opinions and passions. These diverse opinions and passions would allow for more factions which would add up very quickly. The more diversity and factions to be apart of, the less likely there was a chance that one faction would rise to majority. With one faction, there would most likely be another equally agreed upon opposite faction. The large size and interest difference would lead to stability. 3. Gives voice to the minority groups. With a large republic and weaker faction groups, it is more common that there isn’t a major faction considered the majority. A strong central government would allow minority to have say in many particular ways including how smaller states still have equal representation in Senate, and will always have a representative in the House of Representatives. The republic would at least allow the minority to be heard due to the protection of minority groups, because factions would have to discuss their differences.
