Abstract: The purpose of this research is to discover and find out what are the pros and cons that might impact the English language in the social media. For example, people might shorten the word or writ it in a different spelling. Acronyms becomes something that we see in the business communication or work environment. They might also add a new word to the dictionary. In this research, I’m going to make a survey that will be distributed to candidates who are a big fan of using the social media. ‘E-reader’ is a term that has been added to the OED this year, reflecting the rise of products available to read e-books on. ‘OMG’ and ‘LOL’ are widely used acronyms that save time in writing a message. These types of abbreviations have been thought to ‘dumb down’ language and spelling skills. The physical spacing of words have also been shortened, ie from ‘web site’ to ‘website’, reflecting the need to use as few characters as possible within social media updates” [1]. There is an article that talked how social media changed the way we speak and write English. The writer of the article discussed some words that have been added to the Oxford dictionary such as OMG, and LOL. The writer cited that “The use of acronyms (an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word) are now commonplace substitutes to whole sentences; LOL (laugh out loud), OMG (Oh my God), TTYL (talk to you later) are just a few that demonstrate how social media speeds things up by lessening the need to write longer phrases and reduces space.” …show more content…

Research Questions: Is there an impact on the English language by the social media? Is it positive or negative impact? Research Methodology: I made a survey that was distributed to participants who are using the social medial in every single day on their life. The survey covered different areas that leaded to have a strong prove if there is an impact or not. I also conducted interviews with candidates who claimed that they are a big fan of using the social media websites. Each interview took me around 15 minutes in order to find out if the candidate’s language has impacted or not. Ethical Considerations: The participants who have been selected to complete the survey are aware that their personal information are not disclose and they have participated in their free will. This is also apply to those who have been chosen to conduct interviews with them, their own data are not reveal. Moreover, before I distributed the survey or conducted the interview, I get a verbal consent from the participant.
