A person’s first option when they seek stability in health is to go to a physician. Patients put all of their trust on prescribed drugs that will supposedly treat their diseases. Trusting a doctor seems to be an unaware habit with the reasons being the title they hold on to and the experience they’ve gained throughout their career. They’re recognized for their purpose in serving and modifying the well-being of the patients. With this in mind, there has been a continuous amount of outbursts in mental illnesses. With a continuous consumption comes a potential overdependence on these drugs, therefore, raising the speculation regarding the trustworthiness of physicians and/or psychiatrists and their motives behind non-stop prescriptions. If we are to trust physicians, why do they continually prescribe drugs leading to negative side effects ? Dr. David G. Myers, author of the textbook “Myers’ Psychology for AP*”, sets an analogy between depression and the common cold. Myers compares the common cold to depression because, like the common cold, depression is very common among the common folk. Dr. Myers defines depression as “a mental illness characterized by a profound and persistent feeling of sadness or despair.” Scott Sexton, a man who was hospitalized for depression was prescribed a cocktail of anti-depressant that included Zyprexa, Zyprexa is an antipsychotic that treats manic states in bipolar disorders. His mother would forcefully make him take his medication, assuming it would result in a positive outcome regarding his mental health. The American Psychological Association (APA) would get rid of any studies that made the medications seem as unnecessary since experiments shows and proved that people with mental illness have a capable of minimizing the issue without any prescription drugs. Suspicious of the fact how APA response to studies that have potential of creating a bad reputation. The APA having research and knowing how prescription works and affect our bodies should banned and restrict this type of complication. Rather than providing the economic influence and allowing institution to continue to provide this inquiry. The APA authorized the drugs under one condition that medications have to be “safe”. The defiant work here from the APA is not enough to cover and protect individual because as the term “safe” is a winding word.
