For almost 50 years, we have captured and contained orcas, more commonly known as killer whales, from the wild for our own personal entertainment. Living in Indiana, the closest thing we have to a “Shamu Show” is our dolphin shows at the Indianapolis Zoo. Watching those shows can be absolutely enchanting. So much so that you often forget about how they got there or how their habitat suits that massive of an animal, or maybe you just don’t know to think about those things. Although some may argue that we learn and teach more than we harm, orcas are not meant for captivity for the gain of entertainment. It doesn't change in the tanks of containment. However, forced breeding is continued and occasionally ending the life of a killer. Some die during birth, while the other never get the sensation of the wild. One example of a death is that “Bjossa, bore a calf that died of prenatal complications within minutes of its birth in confinement”. David Phillips, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit whale sanctuary project, claims “the lack of meaningful change left many advocates frustrated. ‘ seaworld full intends to continue forced breeding of orcas in captivity”. Many people agree that they would rather see a whale die of natural causes in their own environment than dying from the conditions of captivity. They will never get the experience of their true home. Yet, it is believed that more orcas come across it in the wild because of the lies that the employees at SeaWorld claim. When in reality, the collapsed fin is a result of “no space in which to swim freely and are fed an unnatural diet of thawed dead fish”. It is also a result of depression. Who is telling them to lie? Altogether, who are they covering for? This is just one of the possible many lies that we have figured out. Can they really be trusted? Because of this one lie, the entire show and purposes for what they do should be
