Should Orcas in Captivity be Banned Across the Nation? A few states across the country are trying to ban orca captivity. Recently California has taken a major push to try and stop this horrific tragedy. SeaWorld itself has covered up and lied about the life of killer whales and the mistakes that they have made. Many people do not realize the true tragedy that is being made everyday by the capturing of orcas living at SeaWorld. The orca is the biggest member of the dolphin family (Gammon). Killer whales are known to be very social animals that travel in groups called pods. Each pod has a unique form of communication with different dialects from one group to another (Basic Facts). Orcas are very emotionally attached to their families. They all work together to hunt for their food and to protect one other. When killer whales become separated they send out long calls trying to find each other. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, when people began to catch orcas, they herded the whales into coves. They then had fishing boats with large nets that will capture the whales, to where they can pick out the younger ones (Hoyt). If any whales are killed at the scene of the hunt, the fishermen would then cut the whales open and fill them with rocks and tie anchors to them, so that way they will sink to the bottom of the ocean. People do not realize how large of a crime this is committing. Once the whales’ reach to SeaWorld, they begin their training. They are released into small pools of water, where they interact with the other whales at the facility. If the orcas do a correct job of the stunt, they are reworded with fish. If the new whale does it incorrectly, neither the trained whale nor the beginner whale gets reworded. Soon after failing the... ... middle of paper ... ...ould gather food. After being handfed for all these years, would the orcas remember how to hunt on their own? After thinking this process through, they have come to a conclusion of releasing them into a sea pen. This would hold the whales in open waters that is open to the public, but is not used for entertainment or performance purposes (David). Orca captivity is a major problem that is going on in today’s society. Many people have different emotions whether or not orcas should be banned from captivity. SeaWorld is harming the orca’s life, rather than improving its health. All killer whales in captivity should be released back into the wild. These large incredible creatures should enjoy their lives out in the open, instead of living in small tanks. With releasing these large animals back into their own habitat, it will create a more beneficial life to the whales.
