Are Native American mascots offensive? That all depends on the situation. Most people would go on saying that it’s very offensive how they schools and even some professional football, baseball, and hockey teams use images. The one that mostly rubs everyone the wrong way is the Washington Redskins football team located in Washington D.C. Some people think the mascots are offensive because they use derogatory terms, but some people think they’re okay because it’s a celebration of diversity. Here’s some reasons why people say yes the mascots are offensive. Going back to what I said about the Washington Redskins, Redskins is a derogatory term towards the Native Americans like how the N-word is towards African Americans. Studies show that it can create a hostile learning environment in schools. Some believe that if the mascot offends even one person that we should all listen. Logos in professional sports like the Cleveland Indians with the added features to the logo and has caused a lot of conflict in Most schools or franchises that have a Native American mascots have some tribal people who will stand up for the name and say that you can have them as long as they are not doing anything that people would find offensive to the culture of the Native Americans. A college in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Central Michigan University, has a native tribe name for their mascot, the Chippewas. However, the school does not have an offensive logo, doesn’t have someone dress up at sporting events, or for activities around campus. It’s just there as a mascot name not meant to offend anyone in any shape, way, or form. Also, Mt. Pleasant is a heavily Native American town with the major of the population being part of the Chippewa tribe or some other tribe.
