Should High Schools have a Four Day School Week?
High Schools for years have debated over the conflict of whether they should have a four day school week instead of a five day school week. They have deciphered through the pros and cons to determine which would be the more effective and more promising for their school, teachers and students. Many schools have made the change from a five day school week to a four day school week, but many are still on the fence as to what would be best. High schools should consider having a four day school week because it benefits the teachers, students, and the school by giving them a break, it’s a financial gain, and it improves learning and teaching.

This is the biggest reason that school switch to a four day school week because it can save a school thousands of dollars. Schools can save on things like transportation, custodial pay, food costs, utility bills, and many other expenses. Since there is an extra day schools can save on not paying substitutes to come and fill in for teachers because teacher will more likely to be there every day. The Orlando Sentinel noted that the education board for Lake County School suggests that they have accounted for a four percent saving on food and transportation. The school also talks about that the teacher didn’t see a reduction in pay (Ritchie). The Tribune Business News reported that Deb Wanek, superintendent of Pelican Paids schools said that they have saved more than 100,000 dollars in savings since shortening the week. Wanek said “The four day week helps us immensely” (qtd. In Meier). Schools who have switched from a five day school week to a four day week have seen a decrease in the costs which helps the school out. Some schools are in financial debt and this can help them to get back on their feet. With the money schools save they can invest in other things to make their school a better environment. They can invest in a new school building, new classrooms new books a new gym whatever they feel like can enhance their school
Students now have the opportunity to work another day to save for their future. The four-day school week also provides much more time for these children to spend and enjoy time with friends, and family, as well as enjoying extracurricular activities. There is a lovely environment for the children at the school and an extra day for the instructors to gain knowledge and a better understanding of their curriculum. The schools will be saving a varying amount of money that could be used in case of an emergency with money of any kind. Whether it is an emergency funding program, or money to fund an extracurricular activity. While growing up, I attended a traditional school. This is a schooling method many individuals are probably familiar with. A student attends school for nine months out of the year, and then has a three month break during the summer. However, in my immediate hometown surroundings, nearby traditional schools are assessing the idea of transforming into year-round schools. Year round schooling is one subject debated in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools nationwide. Are schools that operate 365 days a year academically better than traditional schools? What are the cost differences between the two? How would a year-round school effect families? Changing the schooling technique from traditional to year-round has numerous variables that need to be taken into consideration before any grade school or secondary education institution fully commits. Year-round schooling schedules should not be implemented and traditional schooling calendars should be maintained.
School is usually a huge part of every child’s daily agenda. Teenagers in high school basically dedicate their entire day to school and homework. Students in grade 8 are similarly going through the same process as high school students. As students work 2 months after the Winter Break, some of them tend to start reducing their quality in their work. When we’re tired of doing school work for two straight months, why should we only receive a short March Break? Can’t the March Break just be one week longer, the same as the Winter Break? Students shouldn’t be limited to the amount of activities they can do during the March Break. Since the March Break is the last Break of the year, students clearly deserve two weeks of March Break rather than one. Furthermore, students should have the need to relax before the next three more months of school.
Back in the early ages, the idea of year-round school would be thought as completely insane, because the farming families depended on their children to be home during harvest time. Now in modern times, the term year-round school is becoming more and more common in the United States of America. Slowly the schools are changing the way they teach, from giving the students a long three month break to a shorter one month break during the summer. The change of America’s high schools to the year-round schedule benefits both the schools and the students because they still get breaks throughout the school year, the children are less likely to forget information, the children would have more time with the teachers to learn, and the parents would not have to pay for childcare during the long summer break.
Family vacations, pool memberships, and corn de-tasseling; these have been the experiences of traditional Midwestern summers. For centuries young American children have attended school during the winter months, during farming off seasons when their families could afford to be without them. Families have grown accustomed to a traditional school calendar that provides time for bonding throughout the year. Students have grown accustomed to an eight week break during the summer months where they are allowed to refresh their minds before returning for a new school year. Unfortunately, these traditional experiences and practices are now in jeopardy. In today’s race to improve student achievement, traditional school calendars have become a point of contention. Today more and more school districts and parents alike have begun to debate the pros and cons of an alternative school calendar.
School can be known as a dreadful reality of everyday life for a countless number of people. Students and teachers all over the country are constantly looking forward to the next day off of school. Often times students find every excuse to miss school, even if it’s just for a couple of hours. Having to go to school five days in a row with only a two day break is a lot to handle for most people. Many schools are converting from a five-day school week to a four-day school week for many different reasons. Colby Public Schools needs to implement a four day school week because it helps lower the stress levels of students and teachers, improves overall attendance, and saves excess amounts of money.
While switching to a year-round schedule does not always guarantee students the best teachers or learning environment, the educational benefits offered in a year-round school system give students more options in their education. For example, students who fail a class could possibly retake it during one of the many extended breaks throughout the year, which could help them catch up to their peers and make sure they do not fall behind (Schofield 15). Not only would students benefit from making up classes during breaks, but making sure they graduate on time or even early could also decrease taxpayer spending because students would spend less time in school. Others claim the cost of more teachers and air-conditioning (especially during summer) will cancel out or even exceed the savings on buildings and supplies (Schofield 9). Imagine students becoming stressed with the abundant amount of homework they have to accomplish, complaining about the lack of time and fun enjoyable tasks they have to leave out. Currently, District 211 has a five day school week but having a four day school week eradicates these problems, which could have a positive mental and physical effect. Currently, the four day school week is being used in more than 120 school districts across the country, in states including New Hampshire, Colorado, and New Mexico. Use of the four-day school week also extends to several provinces in Canada, France, and Britain. Considering the amount of districts that are executing a four day school week, it is most reasonable to assume that they have significant benefits towards both students and teachers.
School provides a lot of work. There are eight total classes in a semester, and sometimes it can be hard to keep up with everything that school asks of its students. Because of all the work, students tend to ignore the requirements school has. (For example, students will ignore due dates or study suggestions.) However, taking Fridays off (and replacing the days with extra weeks of school) will provide success for the students.
The other reason why we shouldn’t have a four school week is because students will have more time to get into trouble more.Half of high school and middle school students will get into drugs and crimes because they are unsupervised for a long time.If students get into crime and drugs at a young age they probably wouldn’t be able to get a job.Some of the students wouldn’t know it’s bad for them.The reason why is because some of the students don’t know it’s bad is because their parents or teachers haven’t told them about why it is bad.

Every fall teens wake up all groggy and tired because of school starting early. To stop that schools could start later. Why you say because young, growing teens need sleep. And it is proven what growing teens need at least 8 hours a day, they're not getting it. This is why schools should start later.
There are many opinions and studies about reforming school days. Some people are concerned that longer school days would bring more difficulties. However, there are numerous studies and practical examples that prove that we improve students’ performance by lengthening school days. Finally, the economy and our society will benefit from expanding school days.
School should be four days a week with an extra hour added to each school day because it would save money for the school system, increase student motivation, stimulate the economy, and promote student achievement. There has been a decrease in education due to the small amount of resources, causing classrooms to be bigger and children not being able to extend their knowledge. Even though the economy has been falling, each school district has been working hard to promote student education, which could mean trading a traditional school schedule for a four-day school week. That one day can relieve the stress of a busy week and make a student feel refreshed. A refreshed student will learn better than a stressed-out student. The same goes for a teacher.
