Should High Schools have a Four Day School Week?

High Schools for years have debated over the conflict of whether they should have a four day school week instead of a five day school week. They have deciphered through the pros and cons to determine which would be the more effective and more promising for their school, teachers and students. Many schools have made the change from a five day school week to a four day school week, but many are still on the fence as to what would be best. High schools should consider having a four day school week because it benefits the teachers, students, and the school by giving them a break, it’s a financial gain, and it improves learning and teaching.

This is the biggest reason that school switch to a four day school week because it can save a school thousands of dollars. Schools can save on things like transportation, custodial pay, food costs, utility bills, and many other expenses. Since there is an extra day schools can save on not paying substitutes to come and fill in for teachers because teacher will more likely to be there every day. The Orlando Sentinel noted that the education board for Lake County School suggests that they have accounted for a four percent saving on food and transportation. The school also talks about that the teacher didn’t see a reduction in pay (Ritchie). The Tribune Business News reported that Deb Wanek, superintendent of Pelican Paids schools said that they have saved more than 100,000 dollars in savings since shortening the week. Wanek said “The four day week helps us immensely” (qtd. In Meier). Schools who have switched from a five day school week to a four day week have seen a decrease in the costs which helps the school out. Some schools are in financial debt and this can help them to get back on their feet. With the money schools save they can invest in other things to make their school a better environment. They can invest in a new school building, new classrooms new books a new gym whatever they feel like can enhance their school
