Some schools think dodgeball is too violent. Recently principals in Elkton, Maryland banned dodgeball because they think it’s inappropriate and uses slower and non-athletic kids as targets. They did this by removing it from the P.E. curriculum. I think it’s appropriate because it prepares you for real situations that will come later in life, the schools going too far with it, and some kids look forward to it.
As I said earlier the game dodgeball prepares you for real life situations such as other sports, work life, and the truth. Football Vince Lombardi once put it this way: “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.”. I think one reason for this is, as it said in the article, many people don’t want “serious injuries” (a.k.a. lawsuits) but, a little sting from a ball isn’t even close to a serious injury. These outrageous bans are sucking the fun and lessons out of gym by not letting them learn about risks and how to deal with pain, mental and emotional.
Finally, it’s all fun and games. The kids don’t mean to hurt each other and if they did, it doesn’t hurt that much. Plus I personally looked forward to playing dodgeball in middle school because it looked like such a fun game that tested you reflexes and agility. Even though there are other games similar to dodgeball none of them have the same feeling as the original game. On top of that, if they think dodgeball is inappropriate don’t ban a whole group of games such as tag and gymnastics, just ban dodgeball.
In conclusion I think dodgeball is appropriate for school because it prepares you for life lessons by learning to “get back up”. Some kids look forward to it because it’s the ultimate test of agility and reflexes. On top of that, some schools go way too far with it by banning tag and gymnastics.
