Over the years, I continued to give as much of my time, money, and possessions as I could, all the while studying the bible and writing my thoughts on giving and what that meant as a Christian to be a giver. I also wrote about all the good experiences I had while giving my time. when I was 19 I started a group at my community college that made sack lunches and passed them out to homeless people on the weekends. The first year, we did it just once a month, then we went to every weekend. Eventually, we were all so dedicated , we did it year round, even when there were no classes in session. I gave blood, I gave trees to a park, gave all of my time… Though much of it has been rewarding, there were also many times I was grossly taken advantage of. I spread myself too thin helping others to the point that I neglected to take care of myself. I trusted others that I thought were also givers, but were really takers… and lost my life savings of $45,000. I just didn’t see takers coming… I often thought to myself, I must have the word “Sucker” stamped on my forehead. When I was 40 years old, I realized that that thought was all too true. It suddenly came to me one day when I was thinking about the story of Eve in the garden talking to the serpent. If only Eve had not been deceived… but she way. Why?     This past summer, I acquired an internship at Baldwin and Lyons, an insurance company in Indianapolis. Every Wednesday during my internship, a couple of employees and I would participate in a prodigious community service project, Meals on Wheels. Throughout the three months that I worked at Baldwin and Lyons, I got acquainted with some of the individuals whom we delivered to. These inspiring individuals were so grateful and appreciative that we took time out of our day to volunteer to do such a service. One elderly woman who we delivered to would sing to us as she came to the front door “good meals, good meals, good meals.” She is one woman that I will never forget. First going into this, I was elated knowing I was I getting out of the office for a few hours. I did not comprehend the fulfillment I would receive from delivering meals to the elderly and disabled. But I am pleased and proud of the work that I have done for Meals on Wheels. There is no better feeling than doing something for someone else and seeing such gratitude for something so simple. Acts 20:35 says, “In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Peterson). In an effort to revisit and make a difference in my community, I have arranged that over Thanksgiving break, I work Monday through Wednesday delivering for Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana.

    How much money is one morally obligated to give to relief overseas? Many In people would say that although it is a good thing to do, one is not obligated to give anything. Other people would say that if a person has more than he needs, then he should donate a portion of what he has. Peter Singer, however, proposes a radically different view. His essay, “Famine, Affluence, and Morality,” focuses on the Bengal crisis in 1971 and claims that one is morally obligated to give as much as possible. His thesis supports the idea that “We ought to give until we reach the level of marginal utility – that is, the level at which, by giving more, I would cause as much suffering to myself or my dependents as I would relieve by my gift” (399). He says that one's obligation to give to people in need half-way around the world is just as strong as the obligation to give to one's neighbor in need. Even more than that, he says that one should keep giving until, by giving more, you would be in a worse position than the people one means to help. Singer's claim is so different than people's typical idea of morality that is it is easy to quickly dismiss it as being absurd. Saying that one should provide monetary relief to the point that you are in as bad a position as those receiving your aid seems to go against common sense. However, when the evidence he presents is considered, it is impossible not to wonder if he might be right.
