If you want to know who the prophet Elijah is, well, this is the place to look! Elijah means God the Lord or The Strong Lord. Elijah is a Prophet of God. What is a prophet? Glad you should ask. Prophets are messengers of God, they communicate God’s message to mankind. Like most prophets, Elijah did not seek to become God’s prophet. God had chosen him to become a prophet. Elijah did not hesitate to take on his position as a prophet of God. Though it appeared that his life would be threatened by the wicked king because of that reason. God told Elijah that he should push the people of ancient Israel and to turn them away from sin and return back to God. He had a very strong relationship with God. Elijah’s message is capable of helping people around the world today.

Elijah’s childhood is unknown. But he grew up in a place called Tishbite from the region of Gilead. The date was around 870 B.C. and he lived in the time right after King David. There is not much in the Bible about Elijah’s childhood or where he lived.

Ahab married a woman named Jezebel and she worshiped an idol called Baal. Then Ahab began to worship Baal also. Ahab made a place for his people so they could worship Baal instead of God. Eventually Elijah made Ahab and his people to choose between Baal and God. All the priests had tried calling out to Baal for a sign, but nothing happened. Elijah made God show himself by asking God to let them know that He is God. After Elijah said that, the fire of the Lord burned up idol of Baal the bull. Elijah had to tell Ahab and his people to apologize to God. If they did not apologize, God would send a famine and there would be no water, and the people would have no food.
