What important safety steps must be taken in order for a child to get the proper nutrition? There are several Steps, Some which are: making sure the safety requirements are met, storage, preparation, proper food handling, and presentation. None of these steps can be carried out without any proper planning. Sanitation one of the most important steps, Good Hand washing should always be practiced in order to stop the spread of germs and diseases. Especially at an early age when children are still learning it is vital they learn all about washing their hands and the adults should always remind them of this. Keeping the refrigerator at a temperature of 40 ° F or less, and the freezer at 0°F, to slow the growth of bacteria. Most importantly good hand washing is key and vital for good food safety sanitation, diarrhea and other foodborne illnesses can be cut in half with just kids and staff maintaining their hands clean. Proper Storage of food after cooking is important in preventing the spread of bacteria from raw foods. Which is why it is best that raw foods should usually be store at the bottom of the fridge in order to avoid juices from dripping onto other foods or fruits. When handling food it is important to note to avoid certain foods, as they could be a choking hazard for the children. Whole grapes, hard candy, nuts, seeds are to name a few a couple of foods which should be avoided. When handling the proper nutrition it is important to include: Dairy, Grains, Fruits and vegetables, and Meats. Two to two and a half cups of milk should be offered thru out the day. Half a banana or ½ a cup of fruit should be offered as a snack during the day. Steamed broccoli and or carrots should be included also, the serving size of 1 ½ to 2 cups of vegetables. Breakfast is a good time to offer the child their servings of grains; oatmeal, cereal, and a bagel are a few examples of what to give the child. The last part of their meal which should also be included daily is the protein consisting of chicken, beef, or ham preferably the serving size should be 3-5
