This study aims to find the relationship between leadership performance style and project success and to research that whether the project success is influenced by leadership style. According to Belout and Gauvreau (2004), “Nowadays, project management has become a key activity in most modern organizations. Projects usually have a wide variety of objectives, involve numerous internal and external actors, and are conducted in various activity sectors”. Crawford (2000) suggests that project leadership is the highest ranking category among project management competence factors. Project management leadership style affects overall project performance. Recent research supports the idea that successful projects are led by individuals who possess not only a blend of technical and management knowledge, but also leadership skills that are internally compatible with the motivation of the project team (Slevin and Pinto, 1988; Turner et al., 1998). Zimmerer and Yasin (1998) found that positive leadership contributed almost 76% to the success of projects. Negative or poor leadership contributed 67% to the failure of projects. Project leaders need both, relationships and task oriented leadership styles, to cope with the challenges within different phases of project (Slevin and Pinto, 1991). In projects, project leaders must lead their teams towards completing defined goals with in a fixed time scale. However, since the benefits of leadership behaviors can be rather intangible, this has slowed or prevented the implementation of leadership theories. Accordingly, the impact of leadership behaviors on project performance has been one of the major issues for both industry and academic fields (Keller, 1992; Kendra and Taplin, 2004; Turner and Muller, 2005). In order to understand the benefits, there is a need for quantification of the benefits derived from leadership behaviors. There is a need for more comprehensive empirical evidence that evaluates the benefits associated with the project manager's leadership style and, more specifically, its associations with project success. My journey to the path of leadership began as a middle science school teacher at Intermediate School 55 in the projects of Brownsville in Brooklyn, New York. I was exposed to the leadership of Mrs. Allman Manning who championed classroom management, punctuality and perfect attendance. At the time, I was so focused on teaching that I never gave leadership a second thought even though I was surrounded by competent and supportive school leaders. It was while I was at Teachers Preparatory Secondary School in Brownsville Brooklyn, New York that I blossomed and had the opportunity to be a teacher leader. I had excellent role models in Dr. Michael Alcoff, Mrs. Carmen Simon, Ms. Felina Backer and Ms. Carrie Datillo-Burdick.
I have always been fascinated in the leadership aspect of a company, such as the position of C.E.O. or other various roles that will enable me to construct a company by my expectations. In my perspective, my father is the perfect image of a leader - a self-made man raised in poverty to becoming a principal technical leader in a prestigious oil company, while simultaneously spending his free time providing for those in need leading an Indonesian charity organization. Organizations strongly need experienced project managers to lead their staff to accomplish their business goals and deliver successful projects. In an increasingly complex environment, project managers need to turn into many roles and have all kinds of responsibilities at each level of management within an organization. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. This has been a learning curve for me to understand the different managing styles and leadership characteristics of people. One of the managers whom I worked under, was the lead in a government project which also happened to be my last project before I took a break for continuing my studies, is a person I admire till date.
