What is Project Oversight? According to George Baram (2003), Project management oversight (PMO) is an established practice where a review by an independent (non-project personnel) is prepared to examine the risk status of the project (time, cost, and profit) at selected points in time, and possibly explore potential hidden problems that should be addressed and proactively reported to the top management. The overall purpose of project oversight is to ensure timelines are met, costs are not exceeded and revenue is generated. The importance of project oversight assists top management in mitigating risks and allows them to be proactive and take the necessary corrective action when problems arise. By proactively monitoring the project managers the company can reduce the amount of delays ensuring the project stays on track. This is important to the organization due to the fact its serves in the best interest of the stakeholders of the entire project.
Impact to Project Manager
Oversight is interested in supporting and helping the project manager where ever needed. Oversight determines the environment in which the project manager will implement his/her project can have a positive or negative effect. Methods used to hold the project manager responsible and accountable will influence how performance is measured.
