During the time I was practicing, the teacher showed great professionalism. The things I can say about this is that she was very kind to the parents and flexible with them when communicating with them. I help to select new items for the classroom and muscle room and rearrange the setup. On Fridays the morning and afternoon teachers along with all the student teachers meet to discuss what has been going on in the classroom and what is working out well and what needs to be changed. For example we recently change the setup of our lunch table from 2 long tables to 3 separate tables to facilitate better conversations during meals. We also have introduced dinosaur books, puzzles, block mates and toys after we noticed a class wide interest in them. Throughout this semester of college, I have observed three separate Elementary General Music teachers. Each of the teachers had their own personalities that each reflected upon their teaching. They all came from different areas of study, but all still manage to be successful, each with their own pros and cons.

Overall my time in this preschool classroom met all of my expectations based on best practices. I feel that on a typical day when it is the primary teacher or teachers, the room meets the expectations of best practice, NAEYC, ECERS and state standards. Once meeting the teacher, you are able to tell that she is up to date on her research and theories about children and early childhood education. The teacher truly cares about the children, their education and their future.
As we were talking she explained to me her multiple ways of building a relationship with her families include having a classroom news letter, the centers news letter, invitations, greeting, and teacher conferences. Within her classroom news letter she explains to me how she uses it to inform the parents what went on in the past month and will be starting on in the beginning month. She feels this is a good way for the parents to see what their child is learning, plus if there is an upcoming field trip she mentions in the news letter the parents can volunteer to come. Within the centers newsletters she mentions how she normally writes a little paragraph on what the class has just completed or learned. For the invitations to the parents on Friday she sends home a letter to the parent’s upcoming events for the week. She writes in the note inviting the parents to read to the class, and come in a volunteer for field trips that week. She also mentions how she has an open door policy for the parents are allowed to come and watch her class whenever they would like. The mornings and when the students are coming in her classroom is a good time to greet the parents. On April 14th, I got the opportunity to observe Mrs.Osborne's 11th grade AVID class and her 12th grade AP Government class. Mrs. Osborne is a social studies and AVID teacher at Reynolds High School. She has been teaching for 33 years. In the classroom the desks are set up in rows facing the front of the room. Mrs.Osborne's desk is placed in the back corner of the room. On the left side of the room there was a white board and on it written out was each classes learning objective of the day, the days agenda, and what the homework for the day is. At the front of the room students grades are posted by student ID number on a board. The left side of the room had labeled drawers with supplies.
The environment of the classroom is a very important component to how a child learns. It is important to have different learning centers within the room. Ms. Casillas ' room had a writing center and a reading corner. It is tough to have a learning center for each subject taught, when you are limited to one classroom because there is not enough room. Even though the space is small, the room is very organized. In the front of the room, there is a whiteboard where Ms.Casillas puts the date, the helper of the day, and any other important news she wants to share with the class. There is also a smart board in the classroom. The smart board was used for various circumstances ranging from writing sentences, to playing matching games to help with their words for that week. The class also has an iPad for every student. The students used the iPads for recording themselves when they read. Using technology for this is very useful because it allows the child to hear how they sound when they read and fix what needs fixing. The environment of Ms. Casillas ' classroom is great for successful learning.
Successful teachers develop the whole child by making integrated efforts to promote their student’s academic, social and emotional learning. Children need to be aware of themselves and others; make responsible decisions, and be ethical and respectful of the people around them.
I have had many excellent teachers throughout my educational experience, some of these have been wonderful teachers that have set lessons to life. Others have been boring, overly strict, unapproachable, and at times unknowledgeable. I have learned valuable lessons from both. A positive and fun learning environment makes students want to be in the classroom. The first step in learning is that the children must want to be there.
I believe that a teacher has a responsibility to support children and guide them to become a responsible, intelligent, and independent person to be successful in their future, and the Kentucky School Professional Code of Ethics includes that a teacher should “strive to uphold the responsibilities of education profession”. Children spend at least thirteen years from kindergarten to twelfth grade in the school system, and they will encounter many teachers. Some of the teachers they meet through those years will influence the children. It is my desire as an education major student to become an effective teacher and become a good influence to those children. One of my hopes as an education major student is for students to feel the love in my future classroom. I think each child is unique, and each child deserves educational opportunities. I believe a teacher is a profession that requires patience, knowledge, communication skill, and social skill. The teacher also needs to enjoy the interaction with children, and be able to show them the importance of education and respecting and caring for others. Other professional responsibilities include providing several different ways to present the lesson to cover each student’s most beneficial learning style. Also the skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well. Perception is defined as: The way you think about or understand someone or something, the ability to understand or notice something easily or the way that you notice or understand something using one of your senses. When you are a person in uniform these two ideas go hand and hand. It will be assumed you are a person of authority simply due to the uniform you wear but, will you also be perceived as professional as in a person who is trained to do a job well? A teacher who can motivate students, must have a positive attitude and outlook, search for the positive in every student and encourage students to question, search and discover. A teacher needs to be flexible, but firm, understanding, generate interest in everything they teach and never give up on any student.
