Professionalism is a term used in a wide variety of settings. Every job requires their employees to act professionally but the understanding of what the term “professionalism” means can be interpreted in many ways. As a student in a doctor of physical therapy program, it is important to possess the most important aspects of professionalism. One of the most important features of professionalism is communication. As a student, it is important to be able to communicate with professors and other students in a professional manner, whether that be about a topic in class, projects, or getting extra help. This applies to both physical therapy students and physical therapist alike. A physical therapy student needs to be accountable to their peers and professors. It is important to show up to class every day and work hard to learn the material they are being taught. The student also needs to be accountable to their peers when working in groups or showing up to a study session. As a student, it is our job to learn and master all of the material we are given. This is especially important in health care fields because missing a class may cause the student to miss an important topic which may affect their ability to care for patients in the future. It is also important to be accountable to an internship site. The student needs to show up on time, as the physical therapy setting is putting extra time and effort into teaching the student. As a physical therapist, accountability is very important. The patients need the therapist to show up every day in order for them to get treated and be feeling better. A physical therapist also needs to be accountable for continuing their education by taking courses and staying up to date on treatments. There are many aspects that play a role in professionalism, and different careers may have a different take on what professionalism means.
