Insights into “An Army White Paper, The Profession of Arms”
We should limit our conversation to the Corps of Non-Commissioned Officers
(NCOs), Warrant Officers, and Commissioned Officers holding the Rank of Captain or higher to have an intellectual dialog on professionalism in the Army. Privates through
Private First Class almost never, and even Specialist rarely, evoke images of professionalism. You need to invest to develop a job into a profession. You need to invest in yourself, and into those with whom you work. I do not believe that a four-year contract as lower enlisted counts as a profession.

I believe that role of a Human Resources Sergeant is no different from that of any other MOS when it comes to professionalism. You mission, as a sergeant, is the same no matter what your Military Occupational Skill (MOS) might happen to be. As an NCO, you train soldiers to do your shared MOS, period. NCOs train Soldiers to step into the
NCO’s job in the absence of that leader. NCOs should always be looking for potential professionals among their soldiers, to mentor and develop into the NCOs of the future.
Balancing their need for improved technical proficiency and development of your soldiers is a constant struggle that NCOs must juggle. Neglecting the NCO’s own technical advancement will limit the information they will be able to pass on to soldiers.
