Billy slams his bedroom door, frustrated about his school day; his English teacher assigned him a five paragraph informative essay due Wednesday. How does one expect Billy to craft a perfectly written essay in a week? Billy becomes irritable and overwhelmed. The essay rubric now lies crumpled in his trash can. He’s never going to write this essay, at least not today. Many students across the United States can relate to this anecdote. Therefore, procrastination on school assignments, especially on a long-term ones, is a culprit for poor or failing grades. But why does this unfortunate decision like Billy’s occur? In the same manner, fear of failure makes a writer feel as if they will not write a substantial enough paper for the receiver. Freshman student Elizabeth Langen stated, “I think a huge factor in the fact that people procrastinate is they’re afraid of failing so they just avoid the problem until they can’t anymore”. When students experience this fear, they often find an opportunity to avoid the task at hand instead of facing their psychiatric problem. Nonetheless, the fear of success also restrains writers from their full potential. Some students believe if they work hard and efficiently towards an assignment that the process will never end and they will lose the ability to relax and have fun. Well-written essays also have the potential to increase expectations of others which adds additional stress to the student. Furthermore, the fear of loneliness during the writing process affects many students. Students often procrastinate for this reason when they possess a strong ability and desire to connect with others and the outside world. To explain, many stressors and activities including extracurriculars or a struggling home life preoccupy writers, especially around the age of high school students. When students are already stressing over these aspects of their life, they become extremely drained of energy and have no fuel to write a supposedly daunting paper. The task at hand suddenly becomes more significant than needed and the student loses the spark to begin the essay with. In like manner, when creativity is absent either in the guidelines or the student, writing a paper is as enticing as visiting the dentist. Creativity is a main source of the want to write for students. The loss of freedom in writing makes a student feel as if an unsettling and intimidating duty shackles them. Moreover, teachers require students to create essays on certain ideas and topics. If the writer does not connect to the topic assigned, the will to write diminishes.
