How To Saddle A Horse Horseback riding is something I enjoy doing on a regular basis. It’s a fun and relaxing activity for friends and family to partake in after a long, busy day. It can also give you a chance to pull away and be on your own for a while. Given the opportunity I’m certain that everyone would enjoy horseback riding. Before you can go riding, however, there are a few things you need to know how to do, for instance, how to saddle the horse. I believe it is important for everyone to learn how to saddle a horse; saddling a horse consists of checking the tack, grooming the horse, and then saddling the horse. The cinch is the buckle that hangs by the front legs and stomach area. The latigo is the leather strap that comes down from the top of the saddle on the opposite side of the cinch. Grab the latigo and loop it through the cinch, which is around the horse’s stomach, and pull it towards the top where the D-ring is located. The D-ring is connected to the saddle close to where the latigo connects to the saddle. You will need to keep tightening until the saddle is snug on the horse. Then you will tuck the rest of the latigo into the latigo keeper by the saddle horn. After you have the front cinched firmly, you will move to the back cinch. The job of the back cinch is to secure the saddle so that it doesn’t flop in the air when riding the horse. The back cinch needs to be buckled, but not as tight as the front cinch. When this step is complete, move to the front of the horse and buckle the breast collar. The purpose of the breast collar is to keep the saddle centered on the horse’s back so it doesn’t ride back onto the horse’s croup. The breast collar goes around in front of the horse’s front legs and chest. On some saddles, the breast collar has an extra strap hanging from it.
