Introduction

At present people experiencing homelessness is one of the major issues around the world including Australia. Global estimates of homelessness are difficult to calculate. The last time a global survey was attempted was in 2005; this reported that approximately 100 million people were homeless worldwide (reference UN report). In an Australian context, approximately 105,000 people are facing the challenge of homelessness every night. (Homelessness Counts during Homelessness Week 2016, 1-7 August 2016).
Given that homelessness is a worldwide problem, it is clear that the common good is not being upheld. There are few facts can be gathered for this issue of homelessness.

Homelessness is a complex issue, and when thinking about helping this group it is important to identify that homelessness is more than just a lack of housing. It is a multifaceted matter with various causes that can often effect anyone, anytime. For example, issues such as disability, family violence, mental health problems and cultural differences can all contribute to people’s situations. Consequently, solutions for the homeless is more than just providing a ‘housing solution’; it is important to look after their other needs as well. For example their hygiene needs, legal support, mental support, etc.
According to the catholic social thoughts, subsidiarity is can be identified as a recommendation. Subsidiarity is a kind of a principle of organising. It’s involving the people on the ground with decision making process. So problems have to be handled at the local level. This arrangement must only be interfered with to deliver help or to organize activities with an opinion to the common good. There are plenty number of organizations can be found around the Australia to support for the people suffering from homelessness. For an example Australian Red Cross offers wide range of services for homelessness as well as people who are in a risk of homelessness. Such as they support to build community connections and life skill. Through this program they trying to develop community connection. Also they provide support and meals for low income people, further they have ‘night café’ program to free hot meals, information, showers, hygiene products and first aid in a safe place for young people (Australian Red Cross n.d.). When concern about the poor, developing countries situation, the above Red Cross programs can be applied in different ways through their country Red Cross organisations. Especially they can add more counselling services for homeless people who are suffering from mental issues, and counselling for family violence and set up more pre pregnancy counselling or health programs.
Moreover, solidarity can be identified as another recommendation. Solidarity starts as an internal thought and then it has completely taken root within an individual, states itself over various activities that prove an individual’s obligation to the happiness of other people (Massaro 2000).
