Hamartiology: The Problem of Evil (Theodicy)
Does the existence of evil contradict scripture and the existence of an all loving, all powerful and merciful God? Many arguments have been made throughout history that take the fact that evil exists in the world and uses it as a reason that God doesn't exist or cannot exist as he is described. Basically atheists and theists both have an argument for if “God is truly all-loving”, “God is all-powerful” and “Evil exists in a world created by such a God”. Atheists question how evil can exist in the world if God is who he says he is and the theists defend why evil does exist and needs to exist to accomplish God's plan (Elwell p. 413).
Evil can be broken down into two separate forms which include moral or natural evils. Moral Evil comes in the form of disobeying God and as a result leave us feeling covered with shame, confused and anxious. The first sin was an example of moral evil, Adam and Eve disobeyed God when they were told to not eat from the tree and they were persuaded into choosing their own path and disobeying God which brought on the sinful nature of man (Genesis 3). We see this clearly in the forms of both moral and natural evil, we see the pain that is caused by man and his sinful hearts, and we also see this in the natural evils of the world that also cause pain and suffering. God created a redemptive way to save us from this judgement and death through Jesus Christ's finished work on the cross, and those of us who believe can live an eternal life in harmony with God but he also created a place for those who do not believe and put their faith in the savior's hands in which will result in death and eternal separation from God and the eternal presence of moral and natural
