Proactive Patrol vs Reactive Patrol Proactive means to prevent an incident from happening beforehand. It is a method that can be used by law enforcement officers to prevent certain crimes from happening either before the criminal had the opportunity to do an act or while the criminal is attempting to pursue the act. Reactive means responding to an incident or event after the fact. This was practiced by law enforcement officers generally after an incident is called in by witnesses or someone present at the crime scene. Today, proactive policing is practiced more to reduce the crimes and for law enforcement officers to be more familiar with a community and the people living in it. This can cause trouble to the officer that made a certain choice, mainly if the police officer made a choice to allow perpetrator to go their way rather than having to write them a summons or even arrest them. A person’s discretion can be affected by the results, say for instance that same perpetrator harms someone and it was brought to the attention of others that he or she could have been in police custody and that an incident could have been stopped if proactive policing was used. This can be done to the public or by higher ranking officers to lower ranking officers. ‘D’ which stands for Discourtesy, deals with officers displaying rude and inconsiderable behavior to the public while on duty. ‘E’ which stands for Ethnic slurs, deals with bias to the public solely based on race, culture, religion, or nationality.
