Uruguay, a South American country, is a small place between Argentina and Brazil. The country is smaller than the state of Washington which is located in the opposing America. Going into more depth the total square kilometer of Uruguay is 176,215 sq. km. Due to its southern location---33 00 s, 56 00 w to be exact---the climate stays in the warm temperatures throughout most of the year. The country is based around a coast on its southern side. There many residents take home around said body of water. In conclusion, a lot can be learned from Uruguay’s geography and location. Uruguay, which is now a presidential republic did not start that way. First, the South American country was held under control of Spain, then later by Brazil. However, after gaining independence on August 25, 1825, they went to war with Paraguay which then lead to a period of dictatorship. Though, as it had changed over time into what it is now, their first presidential representative was elected as of 1903. Jose Batlle y Ordonez, the first president of Uruguay laid the foundation of modern democracy in Uruguay. In present day Uruguay, the legal system in based on Spanish civil code. Once arrived they ran into plenty tribes of indigenous people. Without knowledge of these people they assumed they were inhuman. At first, the natives and colonists were friendly and often traded with each other. Later, with this accusation of them being another unknown species, they set out to kill all natives. Even though the tribes were good fighters and stronger than the Spanish, the majority of the natives were killed off, conquered, or forced out of land by European colonists, however, plenty of death was caused by Spanish diseases rather than Spain themselves.
