What are pre-writing/writing readiness skills?
Prewriting skills refer to the basic skills children need to learn before they can write. These skills improve the child's ability to handle a pencil, draw, write, copy, and apply color to drawings. One of the most important aspects of prewriting skills is the ability to use of pre-writing shapes. Pre-writing shapes make up the pencil strokes that are used to form letters, numbers, and early drawings. A child will master the pre-writing shapes in sequential order as they grow. Hand and Finger Strength: This refers to the ability to overcome the resistance of using the hand and fingers which produces the muscle power for coordinating pencil movement.
Crossing the mid-line: This is the ability to cross the imaginary line that divides the body into left and right sides and extends from a person’s nose to pelvis.
Pencil-grasp: Refers to how effective the child is at holding the pencil, therefore producing pencil generation appropriate to the child's age.
Hand-eye coordination: Refers to the ability to use the eyes to guide, direct, and control the hand to produce legible handwriting.
Bilateral Coordination: Refers to the ability to use both hands together with one hand taking the lead. For instance, using the dominant hand to hold the pencil while holding the writing paper in place with the other hand.
