Practicum Reflection Paper

Throughout my teaching, in practicum, I noticed many areas that I am strong, but also areas where I really need to improve on. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have had the time in practicum, not only did it help me get a new view on teaching, but it helped me reflect upon myself in every situation of the day.
During that time I was able to find areas that I would consider my strengths. One area I would say I have a great strength would be classroom management. My classroom was very talkative compared to other classes I have taught. Managing them was very difficult at first because I didn’t know what to expect or even how to hand the students. It was also difficult because I wasn’t sure who was supposed to be disciplining and taking control. Once the cooperating teacher and I had this figured out, it was easy for me to take charge and lay down what I expected. I noticed at this time, the students respected me more as a teacher and not just another student.

I believe that my biggest weakness is moving my thoughts to my mouth in a way that my students will be able to understand them. This is something that I have struggled with all my life. Whether it’s through speaking or writing it out. I struggle to get my thoughts out so others can understand where I am coming from and what I’m thinking. I’ve decided that in order to excel in teaching this is crucial for me to overcome. What I’ve planned to do is make it my top goal for student teaching.
During student teaching, it may take me longer to make lesson plans for the week or day, but I’m determined to achieve this goal. One thing that I am going to do is sit down, plan, and review and go through my lesson in my head. Thinking to myself, what do I want to say, what do I want the students to accomplish? By having these questions in mind I will already be able to process my thoughts and speak
