What is poverty? Poverty can be defined in many different ways but according to the encyclopedia, poverty is the lack of many things like basic human needs, for example clean and fresh water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. The inability to afford them is what causes poverty. The cause and effect of poverty placed in many different places. Some may say that poverty can be the result from lack of money but the truth lies deeper than that. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the major causes and sub causes, as well as effects of poverty. Some are education, hunger, health insurance, homelessness, crimes and some of the sub causes as depression, obesity, substandard housing and stress.
Poverty damages a person health over their life course. Poverty has a great impact on society as a whole. Poverty takes away the ability for someone to gain its benefits. Poor people tend to have poor medical care and more than 1/3 of the population lack health insurance. At times people may be uninsured, causing them to have less access to any preventive care, treatment, overall care or any diagnostic services. The poor are usually more likely to die from infectious diseases because of their lack of health care. People in poverty also have the highest risk of infant mortality. Infant mortality is the risk of death in the 1st year of life.
Substandard housing is facilities where people live that have inadequate heating, air conditioning, electricity, or structural durability. History has proven that there is in fact a direct link between poverty and crime bin the United States even although it is full of good-hearted citizens. Poverty links to crimes because poor people are more likely to be involved in streets crimes. Such crimes include assault, robbery, and burglary and auto theft. The poor are more likely to face arrest, trail and conviction or prison. The relationship between poverty and crime has been a controversial subject over the years. Poor people make up the overwhelming majority of those behind bars as 53% of those in prison earned less than $10,000 per year before incarceration.

According to Shipler, the working poor need remedies to improve their circumstances. Throughout his novel, Shipler addressed potential solutions that seemed to adjust the lives of the working poor. It is still unclear whether poverty can ever be eradicated as there are millions still in poverty around the world. The effects of poverty on children have extreme consequences for the early stages of their development, and the consequences for a family relies on the income inadequacies that many in poverty face.
