Introduction

Many people are uneducated on the social issue of poverty. They think that poverty just comes from individuals being lazy and not working. Indeed some poverty does rise from laziness but in most cases these people are fighting everyday to escape from poverty. Poverty has a way of invading people's lives and sometimes never leaving. The struggle of moving up on the social ladder is nearly impossible to most people. Poverty is a social problem, it affects different individuals, and there are public assistance programs to help fight the issue.

What is Poverty

Poverty is noted as being a social inequality, and that is exactly what it is. "Social inequality is the unequal distribution of wealth, income, power and opportunities" (Henslin 191). With that definition we can conclude that poverty is indeed a social inequality, because people who live in poverty do not have an equal opportunities to the wealth, power, and opportunities listed in the definition. To distinguish between the poor and wealthy people of our nation we have social classes. These are big amounts of people who have about the same income, education, and jobs ( Henslin 191). People who are in poverty rarely have a chance of moving up out of the social class they are already in. One's position on this social class ladder has a major impact on the life one lives (Henslin 191). "Biological poverty refers to malnutrition and starvation" (Henslin 193). This type of poverty is when one does not have access to enough food, shelter, and clothing. But there is also relative poverty which is just comparing the how well off the different social classes are (Henslin 193). ... known as HUD. This program allows for people who cannot afford normal rent to live in certain homes approved by the program. This program is also income based. The applicant must fit in the regulations to be approved for HUD housing. The landlord or owner of the property also has hoops to jump through as well to get their residencies approved. The houses and apartments must go through an inspection to be approved.

Workfare is another public assistant program that is enforced here in the United States. Because people say that the access to welfare programs encourages people not to work they formed workfare. Around 2 out of 5 people who go from welfare to workfare no longer live in poverty (Henslin 219). Workfare allowed for a time limited for people receive welfare assistances. They are allowed five years on assistances such as food stamps and WIC (Henslin 219).
