The advent of the Industrial revolution in Europe led to many structural changes in society. Sociology identifies the new society that came after the period of industrial revolution as the industrial society. The following essay will analyse the rise of a new Post-industrial society and how linked or delinked it is from the former industrial period. But first let us understand the structure of the industrial society. The Industrial society was characterised by mass production brought about by the technological innovations and it replaced the agrarian societies of the pre-industrial age. The industrial society was predominantly an urban society, cities had developed around the world and they came to be the political, cultural and economic units of the new society. The industrial society saw a movement from the society of the Gemeinshaft (community) to that of Gesellschaft (contractual association). There was a division of labour and increasing specialisation of tasks. The image of industrialisation was engulfed within modern processes of secularisation, democratization, rationalisation, and bureaucratization. One, creation of a service economy- Bell suggests that the creation of the service economy is characteristic of the post-industrial society. There is a shift from an economy based on production and manufacture of goods to an economy based on services. As societies become more and more industrialised a majority of the labour force are no longer engaged in agriculture or manufacturing but in services defined by trade, finance, recreation, research, education and government.
