However, I agree that there needs to be a balance of each social power in order to have a positive effect on students; this is especially true for coercion and manipulation in the classroom. “These two social powers should be combined with a classroom management style that helps students see teachers as problem solvers (expertness) and as having personal characteristics that make the student want to perform well (likability)” (Alderman & Green, 2011, p. 43). The poem “Students,” by Tom Wayman and the story, “Crow Lake,” by Mary Lawson presents two teachers who cope with the same difficulties of teaching. Although the teachers are faced with identical circumstances, their resolutions for the problem vary. There are many school-wide behavior expectations that will included in my future planning to establish a learning environment and decrease disruptions in the classroom. For this reason, I will teach social behavior to students during my lecture and provide opportunities so they can interact among each other. According to Flannery and Fenning (2014), teachers need to recognize and respond to the need to teach appropriate social behavior at the same time they are teaching the specific lesson (Flannery & Fenning, 2014). I chose these expectations mainly because it helps students meet their needs with a positive behavior and provide opportunities for students to develop social skills. Teachers need to provide opportunities for all students to practice and enhance their social skills (Banks & Obiakor, 2015). Another reason why I chose these expectations is because it enhances student’s positive behavior of culturally and linguistically diverse students. For instance, different resources will be assigned to students where they will be able to practice their skills and change their attitude to become better citizens. For this reason, schools must begin focusing on providing students the skills, attitudes, and knowledge they will need to be successful in the pluralistic and interdependent world in which students will live and work as adults (Diaz-Rico, 2014). I believe it is important that at the start of the new school year the teacher sets up a collegial classroom to maximise learning outcomes. In my classroom I want children to engage with the lessons, I want them to feel happy and therefore, want to be in my class. I want students to see the learning as relevant and have the opportunity to reflect and evaluate their work so they can extend themselves further. I want to teach students to take responsibility for their behaviour and teach them to use self-control, and self management skills through being a lead manager (Blance, 2010). I believe it is important to have a major focus on social learning outcomes and give students the opportunity to gain skills to get along together. Ways I will try and attain these goals are extended upon in the following paragraphs.
With social and emotional skills, a high-quality learning environment that has high-quality classroom structure and rules, commitment to the academic success of all students and high performance expectations, student learning is optimized. Attitudes towards learning, behaviour in and out of the classroom and academic performance have shown improvement with development from quality social and emotional learning that is supported through parent involvement and integrated throughout the entire curriculum.

As a teacher managing problem behavior in your classroom can be one of the most challenging tasks. Behavior problems can range from disruption of lessons to acts of violence against fellow students and teachers. Children’s emotional setbacks and life challenges can also contribute to behavior issues at school. A study done by the Justice Center and the Public Policy Research Institute found that six out of ten students suffered from an “emotional disturbance” and were expelled or suspended between seventh and twelfth grade (Firke, 2011). This same study showed that discipline varied greatly between schools. This report also revealed the urgent need for a more thoughtful technique in school discipline policies. In many cases teachers have exhausted their classroom management strategies without success. Behavior Modification is aimed at improving school and classroom behavior, and can give teachers additional tools to help them to deal proactively and effectively with behaviors that are disruptive to students and teachers in the classroom. When children are disruptive in the classroom it can cause a lot of problems for their classmates and their teacher. Yet, in the long run, it's the disruptive child themselves who is most impacted, on both a social and educational level (Epstein, Atkins, Cullinan, Kutash, & Weaver, 2008). Behavior modification techniques should be used in school, to change the negative behaviors, and increase the positive behaviors seen in these children.
As we consider the relationships between the members of the organization we must consider all of the relationships that make up the school environment. The student/teacher relationship is the most commonly thought of relationship in the school, and rightly so. For effective instruction to take place teachers must be able to build strong quality relationships with their students (Marzano, Waters, & McNulty, 2005). These relationships must move past the surface level and evolve into relationships build to handle the often complex intricacies of the student/teacher dynamic.
As a teacher it is important if not crucial to create a safe learning environment for students, especially students with disabilities. Most schools implement many services that are available in order to support students with mild-extreme disabilities without excluding them from the other students. The ‘least restrictive environment’ (educational psychology for learning and teaching) is an environment that is close to what students without disabilities learn in. However, depending on the severity of the disability, after school classes or sessions may be required. Depending on the primary school year level, some students may not even be aware that their fellow peer has a disability if the student has not been singled out as being disabled. To engage behavioural or disabled students in learning a good strategy is to accompany the main teacher with a teacher aide. In a class of 25 or so students, one teacher is not able to get around to each student individually. One-on-one interaction with student and teacher is highly beneficial with certain students. So, by having a teacher aide in the classroom the main teacher can work with the students who are able to work more independently
One of the most effective ways teachers are able to manage a classroom is through developing positive relationships with students (Emmer & Evertson, 2013). When students feel they are valued and cared for by their teacher, they are much more likely to comply with rules and procedures. A classroom teacher has the great responsibility and privilege to be around students for up to seven hours per day, five days per week for around nine months and during that time, teachers must work to develop positive teacher-student relationships with each student (Boynton & Boynton, 2005). When students are able to experience healthy relationships with their teachers, they grow personally and are self-motivated and achieve academic success (Tassione & Inlay, 2014). There are a number of ways to enrich these relationships and they are all initiated by the teacher. While there are many ways teachers will find to develop teacher-student relationships, only a select number of them will be discussed here.
Teachers have the unique opportunity to support students’ academic and social development at all levels of schooling (Baker et al., 2008; Bronfenbrenner, 1979; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 1998; McCormick, Cappella, O’Connor, & McClowry, in press). According to the attachment theory (Ainsworth, 1982; Bowlby, 1969), positive relationships enable learners to feel safe and secure in their learning environments which helps providing scaffolding for social and academic skills. Learners who have positive teacher-student relationships may have the feeling of closeness, warmth and positivity which will increase their learning ability (Hamre & Pianta 2001). Students will use this relationship as a secure base for them to explore the classroom both academically and socially. Positive relationship with an adult may protect against the negative outcomes associated with children who stay in poverty (Gallagher 2014). According to Murray and Malmgren (2005), low-income students who have strong teacher-student relationships have higher academic achievement than peers who do not have a positive relationship with a teacher. However, there are some teachers who take the 24/7 and 365-day work schedule in a different manner. Parents expect teachers to do their jobs in an ethical manner and hopefully have the best interest of their child in mind. But there are many situations were teachers not only let their students down but also the adults who leave their children in their care. A teacher’s job is to shape the mind of young adults through education but not sexual contact between one another. I hate when one teachers makes a mistake which causes us to look at all teachers. There are some teachers who build productive relationships with their student and help them to succeed not only in the present but also in the future. There are also teachers who take the wrong path and take advantage of their fragile students minds. Teachers should be seen as a role model not as someone our kids have to fear and doesn’t have their best interest in mind. Teachers should use ethical judgment when they create a teacher student relationship. I believe teacher student relationships can be very beneficial to young minds. Some teachers go above and beyond what is required of them and when a teacher acts in an ethically and moral manner a Teacher-Student Relationship if beneficial to all involved.
