The advent of the Internet has revolutionized the world. A new global village has been created through the communication and networking that occurs online. In this Information Age, beginning from the widespread use of the Internet in the mid-1990s, there is an abundance of accessible information. My peers and I are the products of the amalgam of positive and negative elements of this Information Age. It began shaping us in our childhood and continues to shape us today.
Most people argue that the Information Age has improved various aspects of everyday life. Many items are attainable online such as “books, health care, movie and airline tickets, construction materials, music, and electronic devices” (Torr 20). Some of these items can be purchased cheaper online rather than at a store or in person. People also keep contact with one and another through electronic mail, preventing the need of traveling great distances to see friends and relatives. Most kids in contemporary society are more experienced with computers than ever before and are connected to the Internet, encouraging independence and self-sufficiency. A society that is open to all is also a society in which all are vulnerable to some degree. As reading, writing, and shopping increasingly take place on the Internet, citizens around the world are concerned that personal details of their lives are being “monitored, searched, recorded, and stored” (Curley 45). Fear and suspicion has risen, thus Internet users must be careful of how they use their personal data and who is able to see it. If this data was kept on paper, then a computer hacker would not be able to access it. Most people would consider protecting their sensitive data over the convenience of purchasing items online.
