Hoops by Walter Dean Myers takes place in New Jersey, a city where basketball may be the future of a lot of teenagers.Basketball is their only escape to success. Loonie is an All-Star basketball player but he just got a new coach,Cal.Cal was a professional basketball player but he lost everything because of drugs.Now Cal is trying to find his way back to basketball and in other part Loonie is trying to find his way to success. One theme the story leaves us is that always chase your dreams no matter how hard it is and if you fail just stand up and try again. From the very beginning Loonie sees Cal on the floor and right next to him a bottle of wine besides he is so drunk that he can’t even stand up even that he starts to sing a weird song “I really hate you,cause your feet too big” that’s how the song goes. Loonie is still upset about Cal being their new coach. He is so upset that he doesn’t even show up for practices. One night Cal knocks on Loonie’s front door.”I just hate to see a guy with a game as yours throw it away’. This quote makes a huge difference in the history. Loonie starts to feel more confident with his new coach around but he also comeback for practices and he finally decides to play for him. They are about to play a tournament and finally the team is together and Cal walks through the door and he says “ Even though it’s supposed to be a showcase , Scouts are coming. This quotes makes a big impact because everyone on the team wants to be recruit by a good college. By the end of the story Cal shows Loonie a scrapbook then he says: “It is scrap. That’s my life you got there in your hands.Scraps.Pieces of things stuck in an old book that nobody knows about.” That makes a very good ending because Cal shows Loonie when he played professional basketball and he chased his dreams and he never gave
