Pocahontas was a vital mediator who maintained a flimsy peace between two opposing forces. When the English settlers came to Jamestown in 1607 Pocahontas was a young girl of only 11, and she was fascinated by the settlers. The English settlers thought of Pocahontas as a harmless child who, because of her standing as the Powhatan chief 's daughter put her in the perfect position to make and maintain a peace between the settlers and the Natives.
One of the settlers, John Smith, wrote about all that happened in Jamestown. In one of Smith 's writings he talked about how he had been taken prisoner by the Powhatan and just before he was executed him Pocahontas threw herself on him, saving his life. Pocahontas was kept captive in Jamestown for the next year, during the time of her being held captive she converted to Anglicanism, and married settler John Rolfe. I know from previous readings that Rolfe had actually loved Pocahontas but it is widely debated if Pocahontas was truly in love with Rolfe. The marriage, even if it was for love, happed at a time when it was most necessary. The union the war between the English and the Powhatans without either side having to admit fault or defeat. John Rolfe, when asking the English governor for permission to marry Pocahontas, "for the good of this plantation, for the honour of our countrie, for the glory of God, for my owne salvation, and for the converting [of] . . . an unbelieving creature." Pocahontas 's great civility generated great moral and financial support for future missionary adventures to the new land. Unfortunately Pocahontas never returned home from London, her body was not used to the pollution and cold of London and she quickly became riddled with foreign disease leading to her ultimate demise in March of 1617. After Pocahontas 's death another war broke out between the colonies and the Powhatan, and another even more devastating war was a mere four years away.
Even thought it was not just Pocahontas who kept the peace, without her the Powhatans and the English would have ripped each other apart much sooner than they did. If Pocahontas had not 'saved ' John Smith, the English would have attacked and potentially wiped out the Powhatans. And if Pocahontas had not married Rolfe when she did the first Anglo-Powhatan war may have never ended as suddenly as it did.
