Even though the slaves were free it didn't mean that they got the same rights as whites when the Civil War was over. Firstly, they were not allowed to use the same bathrooms, and they were separated into whites bathrooms and colored bathrooms. Secondly, on trains and in cars they couldn't sit with or go in areas that whites could go into like the whites only area on the train. Thirdly, they built separate schools for the kids, one school for only whites and the other for colored. In conclusion, even though the slaves were free they still did not have all the rights that whites had. As stated in the first paragraph even though slaves were free they still did not have many rights as others. Plessy was a man that everyone thought was white, but
