Plagiarism is an issue that has been around for centuries. It has often been a complaint of writers but never considered a real crime. The act of plagiarism is using someone else’s work and presenting it as your own. The word derived from the Latin word plagiarius which means a person who abducts a child or slave of another, or a kidnapper. Martial, a poet used it to mean literary thief. In 1958, the word plagiary entered the English language and was recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary as an adjective. Plagiarism was not used until 1621. The act of plagiarism has always been an issue and is going to continue to grow because of the advancements in the internet, student’s lack of knowledge, and the economy. To curb this issue of plagiarism students should have extensive instruction on how to write, cite, and summarize. Plagiarism should not be discussed only when a paper is due. Students can practice writing in any subject. In school, so much focus is put on subjects that do not relate to everyday life that it is hard for students to actually just write. One main thing that needs to be understood is that plagiarism is not always copying someone else’s work from a book or off the internet. It is considered plagiarism if you pay someone to write a paper for you. For an example, if the student pays their older sister her brother to do their writing assignment it is still considered plagiarism because the work does not have to necessarily but published work. There is also self plagiarism which occurs when the student turns in an assignment that they have already wrote for another class. This may be difficult to spot because the work may not be published. According to the website PlagiarismToday, the ethics of self-plagiarism is a debate. The reason for the debate is when you look at the meaning of plagiarism it comes from the Greek root meaning to “kidnap”. The idea behind plagiarism is that you are “stealing” your own words but when youre using your own words you are not really kidnap your words. Some high school students are faced with getting a job because their families are not able to make ends meet. High School students who desire to go to college participate in multiple extra cirruclar activities which keep them busy in hopes it will get them a scholarship. This can carry a burden on the student not to be able to complete assignments. It is easier to just copy your friends, get on the Internet or get someone to do an assignment for you. In high school, plargairism is easy to with the get away with at time because teachers take hard copies of your essay instead of electronically submitting it. The teacher is overwhelmed with so many graded assignments so it is not highly likely they will check for plagirarism unless it is something that catches their attention. Since there is not enough money through the country to build schools it cause classrooms to be overcrowd. Students are able to use overcrowding as an advantage. In some cases, as long as the format is correct and no visibly grammatical issues students are getting passing grades. Those who do not get a scholarship to go to school either have to choose to not go or get a job to survive while going to school. If the economy is not improved and the government focused more on providing people with better education plagiarism would not continuously be a growing issue.
