Transforming books into movies is a process happening everyday. Keeping classic books classics in the movies can be quite a difficult task, especially when writing for children. Disney is notorious for altering original stories to make them suitable, in their eyes, for children. Pinocchio is one of the many classic stories Disney reinvented for children of all ages to watch. Much of the movie version has both added and deleted scenes. This steers the movie away from violence as much as possible which the book obviously does not.
The movie begins setting the scene in fairy tale form as Geppetto with his newly made marionette wishes upon a star that his marionette "Pinocchio" could be alive. To his surprise, as he falls asleep, a fairy appears to grant his wish and brings Pinocchio to life. Contrary to the movie, in the book Pinocchio is alive without the aid of a fairy. The more Geppetto puts Pinocchio together, the more he becomes alive. The fairy doesn't appear until about halfway through the book. ..., the film portrayed the kids being overly whelmed with hatred when they received gifts from their parents. It was like they never knew their parents existed. Another example of the difference between the book and the movie is Mr. Freeman (mother’s boyfriend) was presented as being very reserved with the children. In the movie he was seen as warm, talkative, and friendly towards Maya and her brother. The film also showed Mr. Freeman’s manly behavior by confronting Vivian (Maya’s mother) at her job. However, in the book Mr. Freeman never left the house, he always sat and waited at home for her.

Ranging from the life lessons about taking action yourself to the lessons about keeping your happiness independent of the actions of others and basing them within the stories with the plot line and the lack of punishment amongst the villains seamlessly weaves the morals with the fiction. The similarities and differences combined together create a unique fairy tale that incorporates all the main aspects of the classic fairy tale while adding newer features simultaneously. These traits of the fairy tale are what has kept the fairy tale alive for such a long time and will keep them alive for many more years to come.
In order to appeal to today’s audience, Disney had to change aspects of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales to fit the audience’s modern day ideals. Any form of entertainment is written for a specific audience. The time period between when the Grimm Brothers were writing to now has seen many changes which alter the way stories are told. In the 1800s, when the Grimm Brothers wrote their fairy tales, people passed down stories through word of mouth. It was a simple time,”They continue to live in such a way that nobody ponders whether they are good or bad, poetic or crude… And they take pleasure in them without having any reason” (Grimm Brothers page xxvi). In the 21st centuries take on the fairytale Rapunzel, the movie “Tangled” depicts the troubled life of an adolescent that is raised by a woman whom is not her mother. Rapunzel is abducted from her crib as an infant by an evil witch, Gothel, for the sole purpose of using her magical hair to enhance her beauty to make her young again. As an eager Rapunzel ages, she soon wants to be set free into a world that she has yet to see.
In the original Cinderella, the stepsisters cut off parts of their feet so they can fit inside the shoe, golden not glass, and at the end pigeons peck out their eyes until they 're blind. In Rapunzel, when old lady Gothel found out about the prince visting Rapunzel she cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and sends her into the dessert to live alone and trunks the prince to climb the hair un the tower and tells him that she 's dead which leads him to jump out the tower’s window. It’s clear to see that Grimm’s tales are graphic and most parents now wouldn’t want their kids reading or hearing those stories. Even though the brothers just copied the stories as they were told the stories are a far stretch from reality, Maria Tatar says “These tales are not politically correct. They are full of sex and violence.” While the Grimm brothers did well on preserving the stories exactly as they were told, in today’s time there are a lot better books aimed towards children unlike the brothers’ tales were. Young children shouldn’t be allowed to read the harsh original versions of the stories they love; they should be able to keep their minds as innocent as they can for as long as they can. ...ere lacking a major part of being a child. Their childhood consisted of constant routines and neglect from their parents, which Poppins made it a point to completely change. When Poppins arrives, the children are given an opportunity to rediscover their imagination. She takes them on multiple journeys such as going to a birthday celebration at the zoo where the animals wished Poppins a happy birthday, and they were even able to see a grown man float to the ceiling in laughter. When Jane and Michael come to Poppins for an explanation of what happened, she refuses to give them an answer and claims she was never there. This lesson she is teaching the children, allows them to make believe on their own and not be just a small version of their parents. As Mary Poppins leaves the children, she is able to recover Jane and Michael’s childhood, which seemed to once be lost.
The blue fairy also has Jiminy Cricket help serve as Pinocchio’s conscious, giving him somewhat of a guide to keep him on the right path. As the two head out to explore the world, Jiminy Crickets role becomes apparently vital. Another great message delivered to children, that throughout their life they are going to face tough choices, and it is always better to have guidance to steer you in the right direction. Jiminy Cricket a very important piece to this movies success, as well as Pinocchio’s success in his journey to becoming a real boy.

In many fairy tales, there is always a damsel in distress that is beautiful and the male character always falls in love with her. In Rapunzel the short story, Rapunzel is put into a tower and lives there most of her young life by her ‘mother’ before her prince comes to recuse her. The difference between Tangled and Rapunzel the short story is that, Rapunzel is the princess and her prince is actually a thief, which ends up falling in love with her. Tangled illustrates how a naïve and beautiful heroine, evil mother figure, and a shallow egotistical hero can make a fairy tale story end with love and marriage.
Walt Disney’s Cinderella is adapted from the original fairy tale written in 1697 by Charles Perrault. There are some key differences between Walt Disney’s Cinderella and Charles Perrault’s Cinderella. In Charles Perrault’s tale, Cinderella’s father is not dead, but the father is controlled by the stepmother. Cinderella’s younger stepsister is much more polite than the older stepsister, who calls Cinderella Cinderwench. The king in Perrault’s tale hosts a two day Ball, which Cinderella attends with the help of the fairy godmother. During Cinderella’s preparation for the first night of the Ball, Cinderella helps the fairy godmother find a coachman when the fairy godmother could not find one. Cinderella’s glass slipper comes off on the second night of the ball. Similar to Walt Disney’s Cinderella, the prince in Perrault’s story announces to marry a woman whose foot will fit in the glass slipper. Unlike the Walt Disney’s tale, Cinderella is not locked up in the attic and the stepmother does not physically attempt to stop Cinderella from trying the slipper. Instead, the step sisters ridicule Cinderella when Cinderella suggests trying on the glass slipper. Cinderella wears the slipper and takes out the other slipper from a pocket which Cinderella puts on the other foot. Suddenly, the fairy godmother appears and transforms Cinderella’s ragged outfit to a magnificent gown. After the transformation, the step sisters recognize Cinderella as the unknown beautiful princess who attended the Ball and beg for forgiveness. Cinderella forgives the step sisters and marries the step sisters to the great lords of the castle. The prince marries Cinderella, however, Perrault does not mention about the prince and Cinderella living happily ever after.

“Rapunzel” by Anne Sexton was a very different take on the fairy tale. There was not a plot or anything that related the original and the poem together other than they both had the same characters. Sexton used the characters to celebrate the relationship between two women, specifically women with a high age difference (Sexton).
