In the initial pages of the novel two pivotal motifs are introduced, the conch and the glasses, and Piggy establishes both of these motifs.
After Piggy explains his previous knowledge of how to use a conch to Ralph he has an idea, “ ‘We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-’ “ (Golding 16).
In the very beginning of the novel the boys have the idea of keeping a fire going at all times in hope of being rescued, but they soon realize that they are unable to start a fire without matches. Then Jack finds the answer, “ Jack pointed suddenly. ‘His specs- use them as burning glasses!’ “ (Golding 40). Piggy’s glasses deliver a sense of hope to the boys, and through his glasses the boys become innovative,
