To me, Christian nursing is established on the belief that good health is a gift from God. This gift should be protected by living within the guidelines given to us by the Lord. Nursing should focus on human healing of the entire body: physical, mental, and spiritual. A lot of people forget that caring for a person’s mental and spiritual well being is just as important, and often times more important, than just caring for the physical problems of an individual. To me, nursing is a calling from God. It means to radiate faith and love towards others as you care for them in some of the best and worst times of their lives. We, as nurses, have little impact on a person’s home life, occupation, economic status, etc. We focus mainly on the person, and their physical, mental, and spiritual well being. As Christian nurses, we should create an environment that is welcoming and accepting. We should make sure that our patients know that we are concerned and care about their questions and concerns. Nursing focuses on being patient advocates and providing the best possible care for each of our patients. We are teachers, counselors, friends, maids, and so much more to so many people. To me, Christian nursing serves this same purpose, be we do so with a different motivation. We don’t do so because it’s our job, we do so because true Christian nurses have a servant’s heart. A Christian’s identity is entwined in their relationship with Jesus Christ. To be Christ-like, there is a strong desire to serve people based on choice, not based on need or “have to.” The patient is our main motivation. Christian nursing is very altruistic.
