As many of my fellow classmates and I discussed on our last day, this class has changed our lives in ways we did not expect. The knowledge I personally have gained from our readings taught me about how different cultures approach philanthropy and practice different methods of giving. This information was made more real by the personal experiences that I was able to hear from my classmates and from you. Hearing these stories allowed not only for a better understanding of viewpoints that are different than mine, but also for an understanding of the amount of diversity that exists among gender, race, ethnicity, or cultural groups. I was able to look through the lense of my own values to discover what aspects of philanthropy are most important to me, and how this impacts my treatment of others. The article “Minorities: Part of the New Face of Philanthropy” discusses the topic of minority’s alternate ways of giving, explaining that minority groups have always had philanthropy as an important tradition in their cultures, despite some statistics that show lower giving rates for minorities. In order to become a well rounded individual you must be aware of the moral problems in society and be able to evaluate them. Respectively, this class has allowed me to do so, through readings and videos, providing my own insight on many moral issues. This class has shown me there are many different interpretations to right and wrong, and hard evidence must be agued to be persuasive. Throughout the course of this class we looked into multiple philosophers such as Kant, Aristotle, and Sandel, a professor at Harvard.

Almost all the charities that you will see will be for overseas America has issues just like other countries, just America 's issues are cover up by the more fortunate. Charity may begin at home but it certainly doesn’t have to end there. I am proud to hear on the news about how the United States is helping in the relief efforts in Haiti after the recent earthquake. Thanks to the values that have been instilled in me, I plan to make a financial contribution to these efforts and I hope others will follow suit. I am comforted to know that there are people not just in my community but around the world that are willing to lend a hand of support to friends, family and to people they will likely never meet. I am proud to be an American, a nation of givers.
A penny saved may be a penny earned, just as a penny spent may begin to better the world. Andrew Carnegie, a man known for his wealth, certainly knew the value of a dollar. His successful business ventures in the railroad industry, steel business, and in communications earned him his multimillion-dollar fortune. Much the opposite of greedy, Carnegie made sure he had what he needed to live a comfortable life, and put what remained of his fortune toward assistance for the general public and the betterment of their communities. He stressed the idea that generosity is superior to arrogance. Carnegie believes that for the wealthy to be generous to their community, rather than live an ostentatious lifestyle proves that they are truly rich in wealth and in heart. He also emphasized that money is most powerful in the hands of the earner, and not anyone else. In his retirement, Carnegie not only spent a great deal of time enriching his life by giving back; but also often wrote about business, money, and his stance on the importance of world peace. His essay “Wealth” presents what he believes are three common ways in which the wealthy typically distribute their money throughout their life and after death. Throughout his essay “Wealth”, Andrew Carnegie appeals to logos as he defines “rich” as having a great deal of wealth not only in materialistic terms, but also in leading an active philanthropic lifestyle. He solidifies this definition in his appeals to ethos and pathos with an emphasis on the rewards of philanthropy to the mind and body.

In North America, Arabs or Muslims, African – Americans, and Indians or Sikhs and Hindus and even Asians are some of the more common minority groups you will come in contact with. Based on a study on ethnic minorities, it was found that “This study explored the impact of income status (low-income vs. non-low-income) on family functioning, social support, and quality of life in a community sample of 125 families. In today’s society, we are blessed with various forms of philanthropy and different ways to achieve this philanthropic culture. When many people think of the term philanthropy, they immediately think of donating money to charities and other non-profit organizations. That is not necessarily the case because an individual can do philanthropy in a variety of different ways. For instance, they can do anything from taking part in or making an organization for the less fortunate. They can even participate in any form of community service that helps ‘people in that community’. Since philanthropy is all about “civic engagement, essentially social reform and community building.” Therefore, philanthropists need to connect with people and go beyond themselves into the world of donors in order to create that community of philanthropy. In a philanthropic culture, the importance of giving is instilled in the everyday organizational life at all levels and in all areas. This invites donors to support and embraced the healing mission of an organization. A philanthropic culture establishes an understanding of how community giving can strengthen and sustain organizations. However, the drive behind a philanthropic culture is to improve the wellbeing of humanity by preventing and solving social problems. Volunteering enables a person to develop new skills that he or she would otherwise not have been able to develop. Unlike most other organizations, a charitable organization is happy to give positions to passionate, though inexperienced, individuals who desire to help others and benefit the community. Being involved in the Charity Club at my school has enabled me to do my share regarding community service. In the Charity Club we organize meetings where we come up with different projects , and then we find ways to collect money and clothes for families in need.Just recently we did this project called MAAT, and the purpose of this project was to help the poor families in Pristina and grow the sense of humanism and volunteerism among the youth. During New Year’s day along side Red Cross we shipped food and clothes for families in the region. It was honestly the best feeling ever, seeing the smiles in their faces when they saw the presents we had for them, was priceless.
For something to be both morally relevant and invariably relevant, it means that the subject, in this case generosity, cannot change in its importance. This means that if we give a value system to acts, a certain act will always have the same value points. To put this into more concrete terms, if generosity has a value of positive points, it must always have positive points if it is invariable relevant. For something to be morally relevant, it has to be important in determining whether an action is moral or not. As an example, take Cans Around the Oval. The different qualities and personalities each individual on earth expresses represents how diverse the planet is which is an indication of how creatures have evolved overtime. Amongst these individuals there are mean-spirited folks or nice-spirited folks, there may even be people who are both depending on the day. When describing The nice-spirited persons the qualities often implicate the term generous. What is generosity? Why are people generous? The further we comprehend this word, the better we are able to judge on it, and answer the proposed questions.
The very first time I read the topic of the essay, it reminded me of a movie I watched when I was around 13. “When someone does you a big favour don’t pay it back, pay it forward” is what little Trevor says in the movie “Pay it forward”. Being at the age of 13 I took it as a lesson of life and it gave me additional incentives to help who the most needed me. Most of the times I received the satisfaction of seeing a smile in the face of someone else, and half of the times I was let down realizing that I was just used by someone else. But I decided not to care; I wanted to do something that would have changed that conservative community I lived in.
Philanthropy, or the act of private and voluntary giving, has been a familiar term since it first entered the English language in the seventeenth century. Translated from the Latin term “philanthropia” or “love of mankind,” philanthropy permeates many social spheres and serves several social purposes including charity, humanitarianism, religious morality and even manipulation for social control.
Philanthropy is powerful because everyone can be affected by the love for mankind, this can change the world for better. Philanthropy is not the practice of self importance and putting yourself above others. Philanthropy and its power of changing the world is about donating to charity your time, belongings, or even sharing kind words or advice in an effort to better others. It is about giving to others less fortunate, and caring about other humans. Whether you know them or not, helping others and caring for the welfare of those less fortunate can change the world. One person can change the life of someone else's by one simple act of charity or kindness. Bill Gates is a wonderful example, due to his material advantages, he can give his belongings to others to help them, rather than keeping all his success to himself. Over his lifetime Mr. Gates donated $27
