Peter was a fisherman when he began his journey with Jesus. Brought to Jesus by his brother, he is outspoken and impudent. Sometimes he would speak without even being called upon to do so. On more than one occasion he put his foot in his mouth and would brazenly say what he thought, sometimes having little faith. At one point in his life, Peter even denied that he was associated with Jesus. After Jesus‘ ascension to heaven, Peter received the Power of the Holy Spirit as Jesus had foretold would happen. This power enabled Peter to become the faithful witness Jesus knew he would be. Giving the first sermon after the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, he continued to minister to many. After announcing that the disciples would fall away and be scattered, Peter boldly told Jesus that he would not fall away. At this, Jesus predicted that Peter would deny knowing him. Peter presumptuously told Jesus there was no way that would happen. Matthew 26:34-35 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” But Peter declared, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” This shows Peter is lacking true faith in Jesus’ words and is also boastful that he would never commit such a betrayal. Without doubt, after Jesus was arrested Peter deserted and then disowned Jesus in the courtyard of the high priest. Three different people announced that Peter had been with Jesus. Every time he denied their claims of association. When he denied being associated with Jesus the third time a rooster crowed. Upon Jesus’ return after being crucified, he walked on the water towards his disciples. The disciples erroneously believed he was a ghost. Revealing himself to them he told them not to be afraid. Peter, being impetuous, told Jesus to prove it was him by calling Peter to come to him on the water. Jesus indulges Peter and calls him to come to him. Beginning to walk on the water towards the Son of God, Peter becomes afraid and starts to sink, calling to be saved.
