To the nutritionist, its seed is second only to the soybean in nutritional value and is a source of cooking oil and vitamins. To the paper or cloth manufacturer, it is the plant that provided much of our paper and clothing for hundreds of years and produces four times more fiber per acre than trees. To the environmentalist, it is the plant that could greatly slow deforestation, restore robbed nutrients by other crops, and help prevent erosion. Preliminary findings show the drug may prove effective against glaucoma and asthma, and control such side nausea in cancer treatment. I concretely believe that marijuana should be legalized in the United States, primarily for the use of medicinal purposes. In technical or for the average American, marijuana, it is used only for recreational purposes. I think marijuana is a plant that could save many lives if it was made legal. My goal is to reverse prejudices, relieve ignorance, and inform people of the known and potential therapeutic uses of this remarkable plant. As of today the nation stands behind three basic ideas of what to do with marijuana; legalize marijuana, make it legal only as a prescription drug, or keep it as it is, illegal. People, who are pro-marijuana like me, argue that marijuana is considerably less harmful than tobacco and alcohol, the most frequently used legal drugs. Furthermore marijuana has never directly caused anyone's death. People who side with the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes believe that the ends justify the means. But the people who want to keep it illegal think that the medical uses do not outweigh the harmful side effects. Before deciding whether marijuana should be legal or illegal, one needs to know some basic facts. Lester Grinspoon, M.D. and James B. Prescription drugs are not to be taken unless prescribed by a doctor. So in fact, we are not legalizing a drug, only introducing a new weapon for fighting illnesses. I hope to have changed people?s minds that have some of the hostilities towards marijuana. Its uses go far beyond just getting "high." It can be used to make paper, therefore saving many trees, clothes, and most importantly for medicine. . The evidence has clearly shown that marijuana has been around for a great deal of time and has served multiple purposes throughout history. Although I do not condone smoking marijuana as a recreational drug, I feel that its positive aspects would greatly assist us in the present as well as the future. Marijuana is a relatively harmless drug that governments around the world have made illegal. If legalized, marijuana can be beneficial to society in a number of ways: whether it be for medical, economic, or public safety reasons. Marijuana has been proven to treat several life debilitating, and even life threatening diseases. Although it is not a cure, marijuana can ease the pain and suffering of a dying person. Another benefit of legalization is the financial gains that governments will accomplish through the taxation of marijuana. This is a realistic claim if marijuana sales are compared to that of cigarettes; governments make billions each year from cigarette taxes (Caputo and Ostrom 484). Every year law enforcement spends countless man-hours trying to apprehend marijuana dealers and growers. This time would be better utilized in dealing with more serious crimes. This essay will display some main reasons why marijuana is a substance with beneficial uses and applications. First, marijuana can be used as a treatment for the effects of diseases such as AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and other terminal diseases. A study carried out in California clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of marijuana as a treatment for cancer: “Over 74 percent of the cancer patients treated in the program have reported that marijuana is more effective in relieving their nausea and vomiting than any other drug they have tried.”(Zeese 1990). Chemotherapy for cancer patients often produces nausea and vomiting. Marijuana has been proven to relieve these symptoms and there have been no known side effects recorded (Ad Hoc Group of Experts part 4).
The legal system easily forgets about providing care to children that parents are incarnated. While many prisons offer parenting classes, they don’t offer programs to help the children during the period of incarnation. Not only do these children suffer from the separation of their parent, many times these children witnessed substance -abuse and violence at home or in their neighborhoods. Thankfully foundations such as The Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Hope House are working to allow incarcerated parents to still be involved in their child’s life. Additionally, awareness should be raised to help lessen the shame children of incarcerated parent’s feel.
Heritage is one of the most important factors that represents where a person came from. In “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, this short story represents not only the symbolism in heritage, but also separates the difference between what heritage really means and what it may be portrayed as. Dee is a well-educated African-American woman who is embarrassed by her mother and sister who are not as knowledgeable as her. On the other hand, Mama and Maggie understand their heritage and embrace it, while Dee believes her heritage is the African culture. In “Everyday Use,” there is symbolism in the quilts, the handicrafts, and the change in Dee’s name and new appearance.
In “Everyday use”, the contrasting views on heritage between a mother and daughter teaches the lesson that heritage should be value for both it’s usefulness as well as its personal significance. Dee erroneously believes to be affirming her African heritage by adopting an African name and an African appearance. She did not realize that she was discarding her true African American heritage. Due part to her leaving her hometown and becoming an educated young woman, the value placed on family objects differ from the value her mother places on the same family objects. Dee misconducts her heritage as material goods as opposed to her ancestors. Mrs. Johnson makes right use of her heritage by giving use of the objects that her ancestors once made. This suggests that ones heritage is learned and passed down from our ancestors and it is not something that one puts on carelessly.

Marijuana has a long standing history of being one of the most controversial substances in America. While the history or the Cannabis plant indicates not only acceptance as a useful plant, but even advocated as a source of revenue and medicinal usage, much of the United States government propaganda over the last 100+ years has led Americans to accept very slighted and often false information about the plant and its uses. Based on the origin of the illegalization of marijuana and the inconsistent findings of its effects in comparison to other substances, both legal and illegal, marijuana should be decriminalized and treated as a recreational substance just as alcohol and tobacco are.

The characters in “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker serve as a comparison between how family heritage and traditions are viewed. Walker illustrates that heritage is represented not by the possession of items or how they look, but buy how they are used, how one’s attitude is, and how they go about a daily lifestyle. Every memory or tradition in “Everyday Use” strengthens the separation in the relationship between Dee and her mother, the narrator, which involves different views on their family heritage.
For years the cry out for the legalization of marijuana has been a hot issue for many Americans particularly in the last several years with activist petitioning for the legalization in the many ballots throughout the United States. Now, even more so with Colorado and Washington decriminalizing marijuana for medical and recreational use even though in doing so it violates federal law which regulates drugs through the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 (Americans For Safe Access). These activists claim that with the legalization marijuana the United States can place a tax on marijuana, use marijuana for medical purposes, use marijuana as a resource, and that the crime rates can possibly go down. On the other hand, many Americans, oppose the legalization of marijuana for a number of reasons because it is morally wrong and it goes against core family values, that marijuana is a gateway drug, the crime rate will not decrease but in fact rise, and that the legalization of marijuana goes against federal drug law therefore should not be legalize.

Imagine your daughter coming to visit you again after a long, long time away. Soon after she comes, she leaves, fuming and furious at you. In Everyday Use by Alice Walker, this is exactly what happens. After being away for a while, Dee (recently wishing to be called ´Wangero´) comes back to visit her mother, Mama, and her rather tame sister, Maggie. After meeting again and having some small talk, Dee remarks on how amazing the familial quilts which Mama had gotten from her Grandma are. Mama and Dee have a little bit of a conflict after this, which results in Dee storming out of the house in anger. Through characterization, conflict, and symbolism, the author suggests that heritage is to be respected, but not worshipped, and if it can be useful in some way then you should use it.
