Did you know that unsafe abortions are the leading cause of maternal death? Unsafe abortions are common in places where abortion is illegal. About 50% of abortions worldwide are unsafe (OBOS, 2014). Abortion is a procedure usually performed by a licensed health care professional to end a pregnancy. There are cases where a woman’s pregnancy ends on its own; this is referred to as a miscarriage or spontaneous abortion. There are two ways a woman can choose to end her pregnancy. One way is by taking medication and the other way is by having surgery. Illegal abortions have been performed long ago dating back to the 1900’s. Back when abortions were illegal, the way a woman obtained an abortion depended on her economic status, race, and where she lived (OBOS, 2014). Abortion should be a woman’s right because rape, incest, and the lack of sexual education in teenagers can all lead to unwanted pregnancies. When family members have sex they increase the risk of serious birth defect or fetal mortality by 50%. Raising a sick child can be a lot of hard work especially for a child who becomes pregnant by a family member she is raped by. A sick child is a child that requires care for the rest of their life. This will interfere with the young mothers’ education. Having an abortion can pose as a good thing and also a bad thing.
