Salem Witch Trials In today’s times, witches are the green complexed, big nosed ladies who ride around on broomsticks at Halloween. Back in the 1600’s, witches looked like average people, but they worked alongside the devil. Salem, Massachusetts, was a religious town of Puritans. They were strong believers in God, and had believed that witches were the devils workers. Everything was usual in Salem in 1692, until, 9-year-old Elizabeth Parris and 11-year-old Abigale Williams had sudden outbursts of screaming, contortions and convulsions, the doctor came and diagnosed witchcraft (Blumberg, Jess) And from this time on, the people of Salem believed there were witches all around them. 1 Peter 5:8: “Be alert and of sober mind. However, either option would send you to jail, or to Gallows Hill. If you confessed that you were guilty, then you would lose your land, your belongings, and your title. Although, if you stayed quiet your land would stay with your family. One of the most noticeable people that stayed quiet were Giles Corey. He was accused and like said, he stayed quiet. He later got tortured to death because he didn’t confess, or plead innocence. As followed, his land and belongings then were in the hands of his wife and family (C, Jason). Witches were awful, ungodly creatures, many people sent out groups of men to find, and punish witches everywhere. Some of the many ways the witch hunters tested if the suspect was a witch was, if they saw a strong connection with an animal.
