France, a country smaller than the state of Texas, is home to 66 million French and has a plethora of political parties; making their political system seem perplexing and overwhelming.
France is comprised of six major political parties including the Union for a Popular Movement, which is France’s main conservative party, the Socialist Party, a moderate social-democratic party that endorses market economy, the Democratic Movement, a social liberal political party, the French Communist Party, the Greens, an environmentally conscious party, the New Center, a party that backs a social market economy, and lastly, the National Front. But what exactly is the National Front? Who supports and doesn’t support the National Front? Are they growing in popularity or dwindling because of their radical views? According to Le Projet du Front National, or the National Front’s party platform, the party is highly nationalistic. In Le Projet du Front National, the National Front takes a tough stand on immigration and seeks a decrease in legal immigration, a ban on immigration rights when joining a spouse or family in France, and a more comprehensive border check system. The National Front also looks to enhance the citizenship requirements, making them harder and essentially making the individual prove they are committed to every aspect of France.
The National Front also puts a heavy emphasis on the French language, according to Le Projet du Front National, in order to keep France’s admirable influence around the world intact. In Le Projet du Front National itself, it states, “Language and power go hand in hand.”
The National Front also hopes to separate France from the European Union, leave the Euro currency and renegotiate European Union treaties to regain France’s national sovereignty, according to Le Projet du Front
