Thomas Jefferson’s “The Declaration of Independence” set forward a movement for change. He believed all men are born free and should have personal liberty, Abraham Lincoln’s “Gettysburg Address” shed light on the new birth of freedom for all. He believed in liberty for all including economic freedom, and Barack Obama’s “Grant Park Victory Speech” brought back hope as we saw a change. All of this progress made throughout history cannot go for granted. One must teach their children the skills to live free. Independence means being in control of one’s own life and decision-makings. Being independent requires responsibility. It is not all fun and games. Life should be balanced and prioritized. Financial stability must be present. This includes having a job or career, making mortgage or rent payments on time, having an insured car for transportation, and paying other bills your lifestyle may consist of. Another important thing to take into account is to have a savings account for emergencies. This alone can prevent financial stress. In Gettysburg Address speech, Abraham Lincoln said, “It is rather for us to be here…that these dead shall not have died in vain…” (478). There were brave Americans who fought and gave their lives for all American’s to have the freedom we now have. We must not forget about all the opportunities we have that our ancestors did not have. Women and people of color can now apply for jobs once only belonged to white men. We have the opportunities to bring in higher income and like more comfortably in this economy. Recognizing the promises of change our Presidency makes and seeing their actions to see if a change is still occurring in our government. Inevitably the things that happen around us; although not directly happening to us, affect us in some way. The more one stays informed the easier it will be to build one’s own opinions on important matters occurring in the world. For example, the upcoming election. In order to vote for our next President, we as a people need to stay connected and informed. Politics are very important. Many laws are being passed and very few people educate themselves on the new changes being made with little to no input from Americans, laws which American’s will be forced to abide by. In the Grant Park Victory Speech, Barack Obama said, “Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans…risking their lives for us.” (688). It is one’s civil duty to do one’s part as American citizens in the government system. Soldiers are out fighting battles for one to maintain this freedom many other countries that do not have our freedom envy American’s lifestyles.
