The evidence against cell phone use in cars seem really bad. Many argue that the practice of eating while driving is that somehow people will find a way to safely multitask. Cell phone causes danger to others, leads to inattention blindness and any technology and multitasking can distract drivers. “A 2005 controlled study of Australia drivers found that cell phone users were four times as likely to get into an accident serious enough to injure them”(kiesbye 19. Whether we choose to admit it or not, driving while yakking is a distraction that may decrease our ability to operate the vehicle effectively. Also distraction like eating can become a problems for drivers who can't react quickly to sharp curves. Coffee is the worst, bringing new meaning to the adage. Texting is the most alarming distraction sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for a second. You cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. “ since 2001, in New York alone, more than 1 million tickets have been issued for holding phones at the wheel”(Kiesbye 23). The spread of technology and the increase of distracted driving on our roadways have created an epidemic that is greatly affecting the population. Drivers should use caution and give their full attention to the road. They should reduce or avoid the influence of talkative distraction, cell phone use and other distractions which interrupt careful driving.
